Step into the dynamic, fast‑paced environment of NewYork‑Presbyterian’s Inpatient services at Columbia Presbyterian Irving Medical Center, where clinical expertise directly impacts patient flow, safety, and outcomes. The Rehabilitation Medicine Department is one of the largest and most respected programs in the nation. We are seeking an experienced Physical Therapist to serve as a clinical leader within Acute Care Physical Therapy, with a dedicated Emergency Department focus. This role is designed for a clinician with strong clinical reasoning, differential diagnosis skills, and experience managing medically complex patients in high‑acuity, time‑sensitive settings. The ED Advanced Clinician will play a critical role in supporting safe discharges, facilitating rapid mobility assessments, and advancing a culture of early mobility and function within emergency medicine. Role Overview As an Advanced Clinician in the Emergency Department, you will function as a clinical expert, mentor, and resource for staff therapists and students. You will support complex clinical decision‑making, assist with competency development, and collaborate closely with Emergency Department physicians, physician assistants, nursing, and case management to ensure timely, patient-centered care. This role also supports hospital strategic initiatives focused on length‑of‑stay reduction, Age‑Friendly care, avoidable admission prevention, and improved transitions of care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy (Master’s or Doctorate preferred).
  • New York State Physical Therapy license.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical Physical Therapy experience.
  • Prior acute care and cardiopulmonary experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in emergency department.
  • Completion of 20 CEUs in Physical Therapy (note that 10 continuing education hours =1CEU): Minimum 10 CEUs within the last 3 years. Minimum 10 CEUs focused on adult inpatient care.
  • Minimum 5 hours of teaching experience.
  • Supervision of at least two Physical Therapy students.
  • Participation in a scholarly, performance improvement, or departmental project (e.g., publication, program initiative).

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced evaluations and interventions for patients presenting to the ED
  • Support rapid admit vs. home disposition decisions through timely, high‑level mobility assessments.
  • Expedite safe discharges and promote functional independence in the ED setting.
  • Serve as a clinical consultant and mentor to inpatient PT staff and students rotating through the ED.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of ED‑specific competencies, training pathways, and mentorship structures.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary partners to integrate PT services into ED workflows and clinical pathways.
  • Lead or participate in performance improvement and program development initiatives, such as ED mobility pathways and outcomes tracking.
  • Support data collection and analysis aligned with departmental and hospital quality goals.
