About The Position

The Grid Operations, Applications, and Transformation (GOAT) team is dedicated to implementing and maintaining PG&E’s Operational Technologies supporting Grid and Distribution Control Centers. These platforms include the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), a foundational component of a sustainable energy future and the Grid of Tomorrow.. We are seeking accomplished, integrity-driven, diverse, and collaborative individuals to join us as a Senior Advance Applications Engineer. The Senior Advanced Applications Engineer will support GOAT’s Product Owners in the development and day‑to‑day support of Grid Control and ADMS Advanced Applications. Example applications include Load Flow, State Estimation, FLISR (Fault Location Isolation and Service Restoration, Volt/VAR Optimization, Dynamic Protection, Switching Management, Outage Management, and system automation schemes. The successful candidate will be a key contributor, partnering closely with Engineering, Grid Operations, IT stakeholders, and the system vendors. This role offers the opportunity to help build new solutions and support system architecture for a leading‑edge technology initiative that enhances Transmission Grid Applications, SCADA, Outage Management, Advanced Applications within ADMS and Distributed Energy Resource Management capabilities across PG&E’s electric grid. Responsibilities span requirements gathering, system design, evaluation, deployment, and ongoing support. Strong organizational, communication, and business analysis skills are essential to understand user needs, align them with vendor capabilities, and drive team consensus. Once the applications are operational, this role will also influence the design of support and operations teams. PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 5 years of electric utility-related work experience
  • Experience with grid modeling software (e.g. CYMDIST, PSLF, Aspen, etc.)

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years of experience working in utility operations (transmission and/or distribution power systems).
  • Hands-on experience with one or more commercial EMS/DMS/ADMS systems (e.g., Schneider Electric, GE, Siemens, Hitachi, OSI, etc.) and associated advanced applications, network models, and SCADA/telemetry interfaces.
  • Strong analytical skills mindset, attention to details in the models and data quality, and ability to communicate clearly with operators, engineers, IT staff, and management.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with and influence at the Director level of leadership across PG&E.
  • Ability to build/ further community & elevate team performance.
  • Execution ability, ownership, and decisiveness. Has excellent SCADA and ADMS technical knowledge and expertise for products supported.
  • Excellent ability to translate user stories/features to technical tasks.
  • Expert level understanding of Agile values and principals
  • Experience working in a cross-functional, highly matrixed environment
  • Familiarity with key Electric Operations systems such as GIS, DMS, OMS, etc
  • Knowledge of distribution equipment
  • Knowledge of protection schemes, SCADA/RTU/PMU concepts, communication protocols (e.g., ICCP, DNP3, IEC 61850), and integration of telemetry and status data into applications.
  • Familiarity with network modeling tools and data (IEC CIM or vendor specific models), SQL databases and Scripting (Python, C#, etc.) for automation and data processing.
  • Experience working with the following tools: Jira, MS Excel, Foundry, Power BI

Responsibilities

  • Act as a lead liaison and collaborate with system integrators, PG&E IT and Cyber Security, and PG&E business Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to implement ADMS.
  • Partner with the vendor to resolve technical challenges, incorporate best practices, and deliver solutions that meet internal client needs efficiently.
  • Maintain in‑depth knowledge of product solutions and provide direction and input into PG&E’s technology roadmap.
  • Enhance and tune PG&E’s electrical distribution Network Model by performing engineering analysis to support advanced application requirements and convergence.
  • Participate in functional testing to validate system performance, ensuring the system accurately incorporates electrical theory, reflects distribution grid operational behavior, and meets PG&E’s acceptance criteria.
  • Lead a review and modernization effort to ensure field apparatus construction standards and operational procedures support current and future systems functionality.
  • Deliver tier‑2 application support and assist control center operations by ensuring optimal application performance and resolving issues related to the network model, telemetry, and overall system functionality.
  • Serve as the applications subject‑matter expert, coordinating across operations, protection, planning, IT, business teams, and cybersecurity. Lead root‑cause analysis for complex SCADA, telemetry, protection, and application performance events.
