About The Position

Senior ADAS System Safety Engineer Hybrid: This role is categorized as Hybrid, and the successful candidate is expected to report to the Global Technical Center in Warren, MI or Milford Proving Ground in Milford, MI three times per week, at minimum. This position can be located at either of these 2 locations. At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard – from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features. Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale. The Role As a Senior ADAS System Safety Engineer , you will play a pivotal role in shaping the safety of GM’s advanced driver assistance systems. You will lead and deliver longitudinal feature safety cases by executing the GM System Safety Process in support of FMVSS 127 vehicle applications. Your work will directly contribute to GM’s vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion. You bring both technical depth and big‑picture thinking – balancing safety, performance, and feature availability – while driving innovation from concept through vehicle launch. In this role, you will influence how safety is designed, analyzed, validated, and continuously improved across complex ADAS systems. We are looking for a highly energetic, creative problem‑solver and technical leader who can own system safety work end‑to-end, collaborate across disciplines, and evolve our safety methodology to meet the challenges of next-generation vehicle platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of engineering experience in functional safety related to systems engineering, software engineering, product development, or other relevant fields
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, analyze, and reason about complex, multi‑disciplinary technical systems
  • Working knowledge of semiconductors and SoC (System on Chip) architectures within safety‑critical systems
  • Strong technical leadership skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across highly cross‑functional teams
  • Strong communication and project execution skills, with the ability to align technical work to program milestones
  • Comfort operating in ambiguous problem spaces and applying structured problem‑solving approaches
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced environment with colleagues across local and global teams
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed (up to 5–10%)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing safety cases for ADAS or automated driving features
  • Hands‑on experience applying ISO 26262, SOTIF, or related safety standards in production programs
  • Familiarity with FMVSS 127, NCAP, or other regulatory and consumer safety requirements
  • Experience performing HARA, FMEA, FTA, or other formal safety analysis techniques
  • Prior involvement in vehicle integration, validation, or road testing of safety‑critical systems
  • Experience working with embedded software, perception, controls, or vehicle dynamics teams
  • Ability to mentor others and help evolve system safety processes and best practices within a large, matrixed organization

Responsibilities

  • Follow the GM System Safety Process, aligned with ISO 26262, to conduct functional safety work across ADAS longitudinal features
  • Drive system safety analysis, hazard identification, and risk mitigation activities using both qualitative and quantitative methods
  • Decompose complex, top‑level system functions to perform hazard analysis and derive clear, testable safety requirements
  • Develop, own, and maintain system safety plans and deliverables aligned to program milestones and launch timelines
  • Partner closely with cross‑functional teams (systems, software, hardware, validation, and program leadership) to develop and deploy a safety strategy that balances feature availability and performance
  • Support definition of verification and validation plans that assess end‑to-end implementation of safety requirements
  • Lead and support resolution of safety issues identified during bench testing, vehicle integration, and on‑road development
  • Coach and support cross‑functional teams on safety‑critical systems, processes, and best practices, consulting senior system safety engineers as needed
