The primary responsibility of the Senior Accountant is to ensure accurate and timely maintenance of accounting records for the U.S. Utilities through support of the monthly close process. This role requires strong analytical skills and sound judgment, as the candidate will make independent decisions while performing accounting activities where only general guidelines or procedures are available. The Senior Accountant will collaborate with various accounting teams to provide assistance , training, and workload balancing support as needed. This position offers regular exposure to company leadership and opportunities for professional growth. The candidate will be expected to build and maintain effective working relationships within the accounting organization and across other business areas supported by the accounting function.

Requirements

  • BS in Accounting
  • Minimum of five years relevant accounting experience
  • Experience with the month end accounting close process
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task
  • In-depth knowledge of US GAAP
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interface with teams within the accounting and business operational areas
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent Microsoft Excel skills
  • Ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently

Nice To Haves

  • CPA preferred
  • Experience in a public utility environment
  • Experience in a service company environment
  • Knowledge of US Utility industry accounting practices and rate making principles
  • In-depth knowledge of the FERC Uniform System of Accounts strongly preferred
  • Experience in SAP ERP system strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist with all corporate accounting activities for the US Utilities businesses and their associated legal entities
  • Own the monthly close processes for AES US Services
  • Maintain and update annual cost allocation methodologies for AES US Services
  • Oversee designated accounting transactional activities performed by AES Servicios America
  • Execute accounting close activities for AES US Services, AES Ohio, and AES Indiana
  • Perform monthly HLBV review and control execution
  • Serve as the general ledger superuser, providing expertise and support as needed
  • Prepare and deliver audit support documentation on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
  • Analyze, reconcile, and validate general ledger activity to ensure accuracy and proper classification
  • Monitor compliance with AES policies, internal controls, and corporate accounting standards
  • Identify accounting and control issues, evaluate root causes, and implement timely resolutions
  • Support regulatory rate case preparation efforts
  • Ensure internal accounting controls are properly designed , operating effectively, and consistently applied
  • Perform ad hoc accounting analyses and tasks as requested by management
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors to resolve accounting and control matters throughout the year
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships across finance, accounting, and other business functions
