About The Position

The Senior Accountant supports Connecticut Public’s accounting and financial reporting functions, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance across all fiscal activities. This role oversees the general ledger, month-end close, financial analysis, grant reporting, and compliance. The Senior Accountant plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of financial systems and supporting audit readiness. Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), internal controls, financial reporting, and/or other applicable regulatory standards, including accounting for controlled entities.
  • Grant management and grant reporting requirements for non-profit and/or government organizations.
  • Specialized non-profit industry accounting practices, reporting requirements and procedures.
  • Skill In: Coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
  • Grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants.
  • Microsoft Office and workplace technology, to include Internet research abilities and the ability to develop complex spreadsheets, graph data, and professional reports.
  • Analytic, organization and problem solving, which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data.
  • Ability to: Handle various projects; manage priorities under tight and dynamic timeframes and deadlines.
  • Demonstrate attention-to-detail, accuracy of data entry, and follow-through.
  • Read, analyze, interpret and explain complex financial data.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial information
  • Maintain accurate financial records.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited university AND a minimum of 4-6 years of progressive and sustained direct professional accounting experience AND/OR any similar combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA is a plus.
  • Non-profit experience is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Maintains schedules for audits, board reports, and external financial reporting.
  • Provides budget-to-actual variance analysis with insights for management decision-making.
  • Prepares and posts journal entries for accruals, deferrals, and adjustments.
  • Performs monthly balance sheet account reconciliations (e.g., endowment, prepaid, accruals, intercompany accounts).
  • Reviews and codes invoices and expense reports.
  • Supports timely month-end and year-end close processes, including variance and trend analyses.
  • Collaborates with Development, Programming, and Finance teams to ensure compliance and alignment with grant objectives.
  • Prepares timely grant reports for funders, adhering to contractual and regulatory requirements.
  • Tracks and reconciles grant revenues and expenditures, ensuring accurate cost allocations.
  • Assists in developing and implementing internal accounting policies and controls.
  • Participates in annual audit and 990 preparation, ensuring complete and accurate documentation.
  • Supports the Controller in preparing audit documentation and responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Assists with integration and optimization of accounting software, including Expensify and Smartsheet.
  • Develops standardized financial reports and dashboards to improve efficiency and transparency.
  • Identifies and implements process improvements in accounting systems and procedures.
  • Fosters collaboration between departments to improve understanding of financial processes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to accounting support staff as needed.
