About The Position

The Temporary Senior Accountant will play a supportive role in managing the financial operations of Cary, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in our accounting processes. This position is responsible for assisting with the preparation of financial statements, providing account reconciliations, supporting audits, and collaborating with team members to identify financial insights that help guide decision-making. The ideal candidate will have previous expertise in governmental accounting and experience with Oracle Financials ERP. You will provide support to a team consisting of professional Accountants, Senior Accountants, Reporting Analysts, and will work under the general supervision of the Financial Reporting Manager.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of accounting practices, generally accepted accounting principles, governmental accounting and laws, ordinances and regulations governing municipal financial matters.
  • Thorough knowledge of governmental financial management practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of government auditing requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of various financial reporting, ACFR reporting.
  • Thorough knowledge of government financial management software.
  • Ability to manage complex financial processes.
  • Knowledge of basic technology used in compiling financial information.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing technology and learn and develop within the Oracle financial software.
  • Ability to work under pressure on several projects simultaneously and within time constraints.
  • Ability to analyze problems and make independent judgments without close supervision.
  • Ability to analyze financial information.
  • Ability to perform independent research and develop recommendations.
  • Ability to prepare concise and detailed reports.
  • Ability to convey relevant key messages through graphical, financial and written form.

  • Ability to build successful relationships with external auditors, consultants, and staff in the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Performs professional accounting work including complex financial analysis and implementation of professional standards.
  • Ensures the Town's adherence to financial federal, state, and local regulations and GASB's technical accounting and reporting pronouncements.
  • Prepares complex journal entries including debt, investments and annual full-accrual conversion adjustments and other audit related annual adjustments.
  • Collaborates across the organization to facilitate the monthly and annual general ledger close.
  • Participates in the financial statement preparation (Annual Comprehensive Financial Report) and audit by preparing various schedules, detailed analytical reviews, narratives, and reconciliations.
  • Serves as an advisor or reviewer for various reconciliations, reports, and complex analyses prepared by departmental accountants and related financial teams.
  • Maintains general ledger fund and account structure; coordinates with other accounting staff and departments to ensure budgetary and informational needs are met.
  • Prepares interim reporting, including the quarterly report and other information as needed.
  • Contributes, develops, and participates in recommendations on operational and technology changes in Finance and throughout Town.
  • Reviews and approves operating and capital project budget adjustment requests.
  • Involved in other reporting requirements; prepares the Municipal Annual Financial Information Report (AFIR).
  • Coordinates year-end project closing; evaluates projects for capital status.
  • Develops complex queries in order to extract the detailed financial information needed to prepare the ACFR and other financial reports.
  • Assists in optimizing the use of Oracle modules, including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Fixed Assets.
  • Assists in the development of financial policies and procedures, related documentation, and training.
  • Monitors grant compliance and ensures accurate reporting for federal, state, and local funding.
  • Supports project accounting by tracking expenditures, preparing cost reports, and ensuring alignment with budgeted allocations.
  • Works on special projects and performs other job-related tasks as required.

Benefits

  • Part-time position, up to 20 hours a week.
  • Maximum of 999 hours per year.
