About The Position

The Senior Accountant position within the Office of the Governor is responsible for overseeing the financial operations, including the collection and disbursement of funds, and ensuring accurate recording of all financial transactions. This role provides high-quality accounting services, fiscal training, and technical assistance to staff, while also managing day-to-day accounting activities. The position reports to the CFO/Controller and may supervise other accounting personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited US college or university.
  • Five to seven years of progressive accounting, financial reporting, or audit experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of computerized accounting and general ledger applications.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent data analysis skills and effectiveness in complex processes.
  • Demonstrated success in managing staff and office operations.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse personnel and agencies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Access, and Office Suite programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in a related field or CPA, CMA, or CFA certification.
  • Experience working in a State of Colorado agency or public institute of higher education.
  • More than ten years of experience in general accounting or financial reporting, with five years in a lead position.
  • Experience monitoring and researching legislation or knowledge of the Colorado legislative process.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee general accounting operations and supervision.
  • Manage fiscal operations of federal grants.
  • Provide internal controls and technical assistance.
  • Conduct internal audits and quality assurance.
  • Deliver financial training to staff.
  • Oversee day-to-day activities for Accounts Payable/Receivable operations.
  • Review and approve invoices and employee expense reports.
  • Research and resolve inquiries concerning accounts payable and receivable issues.
  • Collaborate with procurement and contract teams to resolve discrepancies.
  • Prepare and review journal entries and internal reports.
  • Monitor diagnostic reports related to expenditures.
  • Design and implement financial control systems and policies.
  • Conduct meetings and trainings on fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Perform internal reviews to ensure compliance with regulations.
