Perform full scope accounting duties for the City Fund accounting operations including all Programs/Institutions. Assist with timely and accurate analysis and reporting. This position is expected to maintain The Salvation Army’s high standards of productivity, service excellence, timely results and adherence to policies and procedures.

  • Reconciliation & Analysis Activities:
  • Review, analyze and reconcile balance sheet and income statement general ledger accounts, including timely identification and resolution of reconciling items for all Programs/Institutions. This includes reconciling various intercompany income, liability and revenue accounts.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations on a monthly basis, including the timely identification and resolution of reconciling items.
  • Review cash flow needs or requirements ongoing, providing recommendations as required.
  • Support the annual budget process including ensuring the accuracy of budgets entered in Acumatica.
  • Financial Services & Activities:
  • Post various journal entries in the areas of reconciliation corrections, payroll distributions, insurance and pension expense distributions, support service earnings, interest earnings and standard charges and assessments.
  • Preparation of monthly and annual financial reports.
  • Provide financial consultation to City Fund department managers and staff as required.
  • Ensure the timely completion of the monthly and year-end general ledger closings.
  • Complete all start-up activities required to open or begin a new fiscal year.
  • Review General Ledger activity on a regular basis to ensure proper account distributions, including transaction edit listings.
  • Other:
  • Serve as a backup to the City Fund Staff Accountant.
  • Assist with internal audits by preparing requested responses, reconciliations and work papers supported by adequate documentation.
  • Assist with researching or resolving questions from vendors or department directors as requested.
  • Assist with Chicago Advisory Board and Divisional Finance Board reporting as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • An accounting and finance professional with a minimum of 5 years experience.
  • A well-balanced background in non-profit general ledger, financial analysis and account reconciliations.
  • Use of web-based computerized accounting systems and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or comparable experience.
  • A commitment to promote the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • An interpersonal style that is service oriented as well as anticipates and responds to the needs of client departments.
  • A demonstrated ability to manage projects, priorities and programs in a constantly changing environment.
  • A problem solver with a demonstrated ability to independently resolve problems.
  • A management style that gathers information, consults others, analyses options and offers fiscally viable opinions that reflect good judgement and investment in the long-term needs of the organization.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.

  • An extensive knowledge of the principles of accounting and business management, especially in a non-profit setting.
  • An understanding of data management, procedure development and flow of information.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, using diplomacy and good judgement.
  • A “hands-on” knowledge of how to effectively work with diversity in the workplace.
  • A demonstrated ability to document process and procedures.
  • The ability to function and operate in a paperless environment.
  • Experience in a nonprofit or faith-based organization is preferred.
  • Experience in a multi-entity organization is a plus.
