About The Position

Perform professional accounting or auditing tasks requiring a knowledge of accounting principles and procedures in the development, examination, review, analysis or supervision of financial and accounting records including the preparation of related reports and statements. Within broad administrative policy limitations and following well established and accepted accounting and auditing methods and procedures, accountants design new or revise existing accounting systems. May perform both accounting and auditing activities or, depending on the nature of an agency program and the assignment, may specialize in one functional area.

Requirements

  • For appointment to the Accountant Trainee 1, you must have: A bachelor's in accounting, auditing, or taxation OR a bachelor's with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses.
  • For appointment to the Accountant Trainee 2, you must have: A bachelor's in accounting, auditing, or taxation OR a bachelor's with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses AND one year of professional experience in accounting/auditing or financial internal or field auditing, where you were responsible for the full range of activities in the design and/or review, analysis and management of accounting systems, resulting in the preparation of, or recommendations on, financial statements in accord with generally accepted accounting principles. OR A master's or higher degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses.
  • For appointment to the Senior Accountant (SG-18) you must have: A bachelor's degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation OR a bachelor's degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses AND two years of professional experience in accounting/auditing or financial internal or field auditing, where you were responsible for the full range of activities in the design and/or review, analysis, and management of accounting systems, resulting in the preparation of, or recommendations on, financial statements in accord with generally accepted accounting principles. OR A master's or higher degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation AND one year of professional experience in accounting/auditing or financial internal or field auditing, where you were responsible for the full range of activities in the design and/or review, analysis, and management of accounting systems, resulting in the preparation of, or recommendations on, financial statements in accord with generally accepted accounting principles. OR A currently valid Certified Public Accountant license and registration issued by New York State.
  • NOTE: Courses such as business law, economics, statistics, and most finance courses, although taken as part of an accounting curriculum, cannot be counted toward the 24 semester credit hours.
  • For 70.1 or 70.4 transfer to a Senior Accountant, (SG-18), you must have one year of permanent competitive, or 55-b/55-c service in an approved title for transfer allocated to a SG-16 or above, SG-14 or above for a Trainee 2, SG-12 or above for a Trainee 1, depending on qualifications.
  • If approved for transfer appointment, you may also need to meet the special requirement(s) below: 24 credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation.
