For more information, please visit our website at www.sunchemical.com or connect with us on LinkedIn or Twitter Location: Newport, DE Shift: 2 weeks nights; 2 weeks days and every other weekend OVERVIEW: The Semi‑Finishing Operator supports safe and efficient production by operating equipment, handling chemicals, performing quality checks, and maintaining accurate documentation. This role works closely with production, engineering, and quality teams to ensure products meet specifications and that all work follows safety, environmental, and quality standards. The operator also assists with training new team members and contributes to continuous improvement efforts.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and meet physical job requirements.
  • Ability to climb ladders and to stand for long periods of time.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn Microsoft Office and PLC interfaces.
  • Understanding of 5S, visual management, KPIs, and standard work.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of production or chemical operations experience.
  • Experience in batch chemical processing or process‑safety‑regulated environments.
  • Lean or Six Sigma training/certification.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor batch and drying processes using PLC systems.
  • Load materials, transfer slurries, and follow Batch Card instructions.
  • Maintain housekeeping and operate material handling equipment (hoists, forklifts).
  • Ability to understand and operate spray drying equipment.
  • Safely handle hazardous chemicals in compliance with OSHA PSM requirements.
  • Perform LOTO, safe work permitting, and emergency response activities.
  • Follow all company safety, health, and environmental procedures.
  • Perform in‑process quality testing (pH, conductivity, wet chemistry).
  • Adjust processes based on QC results to meet product specifications.
  • Complete accurate batch records, shift notes, and electronic documentation.
  • Identify and resolve basic equipment or process issues.
  • Assist with inspections, calibration checks, and reporting maintenance needs.
  • Provide on‑the‑job training to new operators.
  • Participate in continuous improvement, RCA, and HAZOP activities.
  • Communicate safety or quality concerns promptly.
