About The Position

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (SEKI), is recruiting Reforestation Crew Members to support post fire restoration in SEKI from the 2020 SQF and 2021 KNP complex fires. The incumbent will support mixed conifer plantings in high burn severity and low natural regeneration sections of the fire footprints occurring in designated wilderness and non-wilderness areas. They will work with National Park Service (NPS) staff to implement measures to restore vegetation community form and function following catastrophic wildfires. Work involves hiking and backpacking in the backcountry along with front country responsibilities. Work schedule will generally be 10-hour days with expectation to work overtime and on the weekends for multiple week-long or more hitches. Technician Essential Job Functions may include the following: Supports SEKI planting projects by coordinating with project leads and contract planting crews on planting plan guidance, safety, logistics, inspections, and quality control. Conducts daily planter and unit inspections, including tracking updates (Avenza), packaging trees to prescription, moving trees and equipment from stock drop points, and planting trees when assigned. Collects effectiveness monitoring data, establishes and maintains monitoring plots, and supports additional restoration activities such as nursery or seed collection as needed. Operates in remote wilderness environments, including extended backcountry camping (up to seven nights) without formal facilities, while transporting time-sensitive equipment and communications between locations. Participates in required training covering project history, planting prescriptions, quality inspections, monitoring methods, wilderness first aid, data collection, and safe driving. LOCATION This position is based out of Sequoia National Park’s headquarters within Three Rivers, California. Crews will travel throughout the park to complete projects from their assigned field station. WORK SCHEDULE Start: March 9-30, 2026 End: May 2-30, 2026 Most positions follow 10 hour days, 4 days a week schedule. Temporary Special Assignment employees are eligible to receive holiday pay, if partner approved. TSAs holiday schedule will comply with the project partner holiday schedule, unless otherwise specified in their employment offer. TSAs working five (5) eight (8) hour days per workweek will be paid eight (8) hours for all holidays. TSAs working four (4) ten (10) hour days per workweek will be paid ten (10) hours for all holidays. Same with other approved/allowable workweek configurations; these can be accommodated accordingly with Banked Holiday(s). COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Wage: $20-$24/hour with overtime at 1.5x hourly rate. Full time, average 40 hours per week Housing provided for positions. In addition to a competitive hourly rate, this TSA position includes premium comprehensive medical, dental (with option to upgrade in coverage), and vision insurance, as well as $25,000 Life/AD&D policy. Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds and hike up to 10 miles in rugged terrain including post-fire environment
  • Experience working in outdoor, field-based, or natural resource projects, including reforestation, restoration, forestry, conservation, or related work.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform quality control inspections, follow technical planting plans or prescriptions, and provide clear guidance to field crews.
  • Experience working in remote or wilderness settings, including extended backcountry camping without access to formal facilities or running water.
  • Ability to transport equipment, materials, and time-sensitive information between field locations over rugged terrain.
  • Experience collecting field data and using mobile or GPS-based applications (e.g., Avenza or similar) for tracking, navigation, and documentation.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with crew leaders, contract planters, agency staff, and project partners.
  • Willingness and ability to perform physically demanding work, including hiking long distances, carrying loads, planting trees, and working in variable weather conditions.
  • Commitment to maintaining a positive, respectful, and professional attitude while working in team-based and high-responsibility field environments.
  • Ability to contribute to shared camp responsibilities, including cooking, cleaning, and equipment organization.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is required as a condition of employment for this position.
