About The Position

The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (called Base Camp), which will be completed in 2026. The public-facing portion of this renovation will be the new National Geographic Museum of Exploration. Components of the new museum will include a state-of-the-art pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and exciting new event space. The capstone of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind nighttime experience in the courtyard. This position will provide support to the Security Manager and Director. The successful candidate will ensure that effective systems are in place, so as to manage security emergencies and keep all staff aware of security regulations and compliance procedures. This position will also be responsible for knowledge of the Security systems, supervision of assigned security personnel, and enforcement of established security procedures, guidelines, and protection measures. This position is considered essential (24/7) and personnel will be required to come to or remain at work during emergency situations to assure proper coverage until properly relieved. A flexible work schedule is required for this position which includes working 3 shift variations which may include, days, evenings, nights, weekend, holidays, reporting for duty on short notice and overtime. Assume post duties as needed when short staffed. Schedule consists of: 1 morning, 2 afternoons, 2 nights.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in security, law enforcement or military.
  • At least five (5) years of professional experience within an operations command center, fusion center, public safety dispatch center, 24/7 communications hub, and at least (2) years of experience at the supervisory level.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to be commissioned as an Unarmed Special Police Officer by the District of Columbia within 1 month of hire.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, digital recording devices, and electronic camera monitoring systems is required, along with the ability to quickly navigate additional software.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as good customer service skills, are essential.
  • This role requires leadership and the ability to work in a teamwork environment, guiding and supporting others.
  • Must be able to perform essential functions of the position, which may include long periods of sitting, walking, standing, and climbing stairs.
  • Must act with integrity and ethical standards, demonstrating honesty in all actions and decisions.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to take ownership of responsibilities, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.-in a timely manner
  • A strong attention to detail is critical for overseeing operations and ensuring compliance with all protocols.
  • This position requires working well both independently and in team settings.
  • Implementing all site specific rules and regulations to meet high standards.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead security supervisor during the assigned shift, with responsibility for either Command Center operations or supervision of posted officers, depending on assignment. Ensure that all assigned personnel are meeting performance expectations, maintaining post coverage, in proper uniform, licensed, and adhering to established security protocols. Collaborate with other supervisors on duty to coordinate responsibilities and ensure operational continuity. (35%)
  • Write incident, accident, theft and shift log reports occurring during the assigned shift to include investigation and follow up actions. Maintain employee and visitor parking records. Retrieve information from the security database for periodic reports and audits. (20%)
  • Answer telephones, monitor camera activity and maintain communication with security personnel via two way radios. Oversee and ensure proper function of all security equipment. Operate and utilize Control Center equipment to include CCTV operations and controls and video recording/playback. Read patrol reports and take proper actions to remedy any discrepancies without delay. Make decisions in emergency situations in the absence of management. (20%)
  • Evaluate existing technical capabilities and security systems and identify opportunities for improvement. Monitor all equipment and interfaced systems so that there is no degradation or interruption in service to ensure operational continuity. (10%)
  • Communicate any changes to operations so that all personnel understand and are able to apply the change(s). Ensures all requests for service are assigned to the correct individual/entity for action, and personnel comply with policies and procedures. (15%)
