Directs all Response, Public Safety, Communications, and Contract Officers in field operations and communications with their respective shift/team. Provides support for primary functions, including scheduling, reviewing incidents, training employees, and monitoring performance. This position escalates in importance quickly in the situation at hand. This Supervisor can serve as the campus emergency contact and the hands-on Crisis Manager in a given situation. Takes action to resolve high-profile situations that may affect university/community relations. Administers or manages projects and associated budgets. Coordinates with the Assistant Director of Operations on short-term and long-term strategies for operations/patrol.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or combination of education and experience may substitute for minimum education.
  • Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card - Illinois State Police (ISP), St. Louis Metropolitan Security License - St. Louis City/St. Louis County, St. Louis Metropolitan Security License - within 30 days of hire - St. Louis City/St. Louis County
  • Professional Law Enforcement Management Positions Of Increasing Responsibility Or Complexity (8 Years), Professional Armed Security (3 Years)
  • A Class E (MO) or Class D (IL) license and a good driving record are required for this position.
  • If the individual has not completed a previous departmental assessment, a psychological assessment will be necessary for this position.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a St. Louis Metropolitan Security License within 30 days of hire.
  • To obtain this St. Louis Metropolitan Security License, one must meet the basic licensing requirements for the Security Officer licensing category, which require individuals to be at least 21 years of age (https://slmpd.org/privatesecurity/).
  • If an Illinois resident, must have a valid FOID card.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Missouri Class E or Illinois Class D Driver’s license within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Initiates daily direction of a WUPS shift/team and takes immediate action to manage critical situations on shift.
  • Develops team members' work assignments and ensures all officers are appropriately informed to perform their duties effectively.
  • Manages officers' work assignments and verifies performance to standards.
  • Reviews in detail all incident reports, ensuring complete information, and forwards them to the appropriate agencies.
  • Initiates immediate investigations as needed.
  • Ensures the shift Crime and Incident Summary is prepared.
  • Coordinates with Investigators and maintains oversight of incidents needing further investigation to assure a positive outcome.
  • Performs special projects as assigned.
  • Implements patrol initiatives.
  • Supports a variety of campus safety programs.
  • Serves as a management team member in the departmental professional accreditation program.
  • Assists with senior leadership in a variety of logistical and other administrative functions.
  • Prepares to handle extra duties when severe weather or other crises arise.
  • Analyzes officer capabilities, certifications, and training to ensure a balanced team is ready for all the shift(s) under their charge.
  • Works with the Protective Services Training Coordinator to ensure the highest level of officer capability.
  • Conducts in-service and specialized officer training.
  • Evaluates the performance of assigned officers.
  • Responsible for officer performance improvement plans and developing officers.
  • Participates in the selection, interviewing, and training of officer applicants/candidates.
  • Acts as liaison with campus partners (BJC, UHSP), outside agencies, community organizations, and stakeholders in situations that may affect university community relations.
  • May serve as a member of various committees or working groups within OFMD.
  • Develops and/or monitors databases and metrics in support of unit performance.
  • Analyzes and makes recommendations to the Assistant Director or Director of Protective Services regarding process improvement.
  • In the absence of senior leadership, serves as the primary campus leader in unforeseen circumstances.
