About The Position

The Security Officer is responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for all individuals within the Center for Special Care. This involves preventing and de-escalating crises, responding to emergencies, and supporting clinical staff during behavioral incidents in accordance with hospital policies. Key duties include patrolling areas to prevent fire, thefts, vandalism, and other crimes, checking for unauthorized persons, directing parking, reporting hazardous conditions, and collaborating with other hospital departments. The role requires maintaining high visibility both internally and externally, documenting all security occurrences, and responding to various emergency calls such as medical emergencies, fall alerts, behavioral responses, armed intruder/active shooter situations, and fire alarms. The officer will also monitor closed-circuit television systems, prepare incident reports, and assist visitors and staff as needed.

Requirements

  • Possesses sound interpersonal and written communications skills.
  • Able to deal with all people in a variety of situations.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrates good judgment, flexibility in changing circumstances and compassion.
  • State of Connecticut Security Officer Identification Card.
  • Valid State of Connecticut driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe and secure environment for all persons utilizing any Center for Special Care environment.
  • Prevent and de-escalate crises.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Support clinical staff during behavioral incidents in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Patrol areas to prevent fire, thefts, vandalism, and other crimes.
  • Check for unauthorized persons entering.
  • Direct persons on parking.
  • Report all hazardous conditions and take corrective action if possible.
  • Work closely with all hospital departments and service lines whenever problems of mutual concern arise.
  • Maintain visibility in all areas of the hospital both internally and externally.
  • Report and document all occurrences tracked by Security Department.
  • Contact and inform other departments and persons of potential problems and advise of necessary actions.
  • Evaluate persons entering hospital grounds to determine if they pose a threat to the hospital security.
  • Monitor, question and observe any suspicious behavior.
  • Take appropriate action to control suspects and call for assistance as needed.
  • Report any incident to the shift Supervisor.
  • Eliminate or correct any hazards during emergencies or adjust available personnel to handle problems as necessary.
  • Patrol buildings and grounds of hospital to prevent fires, theft, vandalism, and other security breaches.
  • Assist people when necessary with directions and destination by following the department guidelines listed in the manual and post orders.
  • Respond to Medical Emergencies, Fall Alerts, Behavioral Responses, Armed Intruder/Active Shooter and Fire Plan calls or other emergency response calls to render assistance.
  • Respond quickly and safely and render proper assistance.
  • Notify supervisor of action taken.
  • Make necessary reports and documentation when necessary according to department manual policy.
  • Monitor the closed circuit television system.
  • Keep abreast of daily reports and communications, memos, bulletins, incident reports, and other pertinent information helpful to job activity.
  • Make recommendations to improve quality of enforcement by submitting reports to Officer In-Charge or the Public Safety and Security Manager.
  • Submit repair request orders as necessary.
  • Prepare appropriate incident reports.
  • Report all unusual incidents and conditions immediately and notify the supervisor or backup according to post regulations and training guide.
  • Demonstrate a good rapport and work to establish cooperative working relations with all members of department and hospital staff.
  • Provide escorts to visitors and staff as needed/requested.
  • Maintain visibility in parking areas during peak hours.
  • Cover for the switchboard operator and concierge as needed.
  • Provide courier services as needed.
  • Issue Visitor Passes at the main lobby desk as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
