About The Position

The Security Officer is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for patients, employees, and visitors by protecting hospital buildings, assets, and premises. This role involves proactive patrolling, incident response, and maintaining order while upholding the policies and procedures of Good Shepherd Health Care System.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid State issued Driver’s License required.
  • Unarmed Guard certification from the Oregon Department of Public Safety and Security (DPSST) required or shall be obtained upon hire.
  • Current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification required.
  • Current MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) or equivalent de-escalation/restraint certification required upon hire.
  • None.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft operating systems and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision, demonstrating initiative and sound judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting, clear instruction, and professional interaction.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact respectfully and effectively with a culturally diverse population (patients, visitors, staff).
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure, potentially confrontational, or emergency situations.
  • Strong observation and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information (e.g., Protected Health Information).

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in criminal justice, Security Management, or a related field
  • Previous experience in security operations, criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field strongly preferred
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) communication skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol hospital buildings, grounds, and premises regularly to deter and detect fire hazards, theft, vandalism, unauthorized entry, and other security breaches.
  • Monitor the conduct of visitors and personnel on hospital premises, confronting and questioning unauthorized individuals as necessary.
  • Identify and report safety hazards, fire risks, and security violations promptly.
  • Respond effectively to inquiries for advice or assistance from hospital personnel, patients, students, and visitors, providing guidance and support.
  • Provide physical restraint of psychiatric patients safely and appropriately as needed, following established protocols and training.
  • Participate in security investigations, gather evidence, and maintain accurate records.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports and other essential documentation related to security activities.
  • Secure and/or unlock offices, facilities, and designated areas according to schedule or request.
  • Secure patient valuables and lost-and-found articles, maintaining precise logs of all items received and released.
  • Control parking and traffic flow on hospital premises, enforcing parking regulations to ensure smooth operations and safety.
  • Assist with the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate departmental records, reports, and files as required.
  • Engage in continuous professional development through educational programs, current literature review, in-service meetings, and workshops to stay current with best practices.
  • The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
