About The Position

The Broadlawns Medical Center campus includes an acute care hospital, primary and specialty care clinics, urgent care and emergency services, lab, radiology, dentistry, inpatient and outpatient mental health, crisis team, and community-based behavioral support services. Broadlawns Medical Center is a safety net hospital with a dedicated staff of over 160 physicians and 1,600 employees, ensuring the community has access to high quality, coordinated, compassionate, and cost-effective healthcare. The Public Safety Officer, under the general supervision of the Public Safety Supervisor and Public Safety Director, completes regular tours of BMC and patrols grounds on foot and in vehicle to maintain order throughout BMC property. This role is responsible for protecting the life and property of all persons on hospital premises and policing BMC buildings and groups to prevent and/or respond quickly to fire, theft, assault, or vandalism.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Iowa driver’s license.
  • May not be convicted of a crime other than a minor traffic violation in the previous five years, may not be convicted of a felony crime at any time; and have no more than three moving violations in a 12-month period.
  • One year of security, behavioral health, or related experience, or completion of a two- or four-year degree in a related field.
  • Basic Training Certification from the International Association of Hospital Security and Safety obtained within six months of hire.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Ability to physically manage aggressive individuals, including physically restraining.
  • Ability to complete training necessary for the performance of the job (e.g., weapon systems of Taser, ASP Baton, and OC Spray successfully completed through BMC within six months of hire date).
  • Ability to remain calm during crisis situations.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol buildings and grounds of hospital to prevent and/or respond to fires, theft, assault, or vandalism.
  • Ensure only authorized personnel are admitted onto BMC premises.
  • Escort and assist visitors, patients, and employees to and from the parking lot or between buildings.
  • Assist motorists who become stranded on BMC property.
  • Maintain current information in lost and found logs.
  • Notify individuals when reported items are located.
  • Serve as a member of the Fire Response Team and respond to Fire Alarms.
  • Investigate incidents of unusual circumstances reported by hospital staff, visitors, physicians, or patients.
  • Document incident reports including completed investigatory steps and results.
  • Respond quickly to emergency calls for assistance to control disorderly conduct or combative behavior.
  • Regularly patrol buildings and grounds including inspecting doors, windows, and locks to determine level of security.
  • Inspect outgoing parcels as necessary to prevent theft of hospital property.
  • Report all safety and fire hazards observed on routine patrols and inspections.
  • Assist with traffic control by keeping fire lanes, fire hydrants, and ambulance entrances free of vehicles.
  • Issue parking tickets to vehicle operators who have violated parking regulations.
  • Maintain an accurate log of all activity on tour of duty.
  • Respond to all announced Emergency codes in a timely manner.
  • Maintain professional conduct when dealing with patients who are aggressive in communication and conduct and physically manage aggressive individuals while maintaining their dignity as much as possible.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Conduct a minimum of two interior tours of BMC per shift.
  • Respond to calls for assistance, without delay, at the first available opportunity.
  • Accurately complete all required reports, paperwork, and daily logs by the end of the work shift.
  • Patrol parking lots, issue citations or warning violations of BMC Parking Policy, and accurately complete all necessary paperwork.
  • Immediately report safety issues to the department supervisor, utilizing the appropriate reporting standards (i.e., BMCNET General Service Request Form).
  • Complete special orders or assignments completely and as assigned.
  • Complete and maintain behavior management certifications and all other training necessary for performance of the job.
