About The Position
The Security Officer position is a full-time role within the Safety and Security team at St. Lawrence University. This position requires a commitment of forty hours per week, typically structured as eight-hour shifts. The primary responsibility of the Security Officer is to ensure a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community and visitors. This is achieved through the enforcement of University policies, as well as adherence to village, state, and federal laws. The officer must maintain a thorough understanding of the St. Lawrence University student handbook, university rules and regulations, and the security department's policies and procedures. The Security Officer will patrol the campus using various means, including on foot, by bicycle, or by vehicle, while dressed in the authorized uniform. In addition to patrolling, the officer will respond to emergencies, provide assistance as needed, and summon appropriate help when required. Investigating and reporting suspicious activities on campus is a critical duty, which includes conducting preliminary investigations of incidents and submitting detailed written reports using the appropriate forms and databases. Additional responsibilities include providing money and safety escorts for the university community, unlocking and securing buildings according to established procedures, and assisting faculty, staff, and students in gaining authorized access to classrooms, offices, and residence halls. The officer will also assist in crowd and traffic control during special events, athletic games, concerts, and other critical situations. Responding to life-safety device alarms, such as fire alarms and smoke sensor activations, is also part of the role, along with conducting personal safety and security awareness programming as requested. The Security Officer may be assigned other duties as delegated by supervisors. The schedule for this position is flexible, requiring the officer to be willing to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
