About The Position
The Security Officer position at Thomas Jefferson University is a critical role focused on ensuring the safety and security of university and hospital personnel, patients, students, visitors, and Jefferson assets. The officer will perform security duties either at a fixed post or while patrolling the buildings and grounds. This includes responding to calls for service, checking for unauthorized persons, and identifying general security violations and fire or safety hazards. The role requires the officer to be adaptable, capable of being assigned to any fixed post or patrol duties in various environments and shifts. In addition to monitoring the premises, the Security Officer will assist patients, visitors, and students by providing directions or information as needed. Interaction with co-workers and visitors must align with the values of Jefferson, promoting a safe and welcoming environment. The officer will conduct security patrols, verify the appropriateness of individuals on the property by checking identification badges, and escort unauthorized persons off campus when necessary. The officer is expected to respond promptly to calls for service, including priority incidents and emergencies, and notify their supervisor of any conditions that require attention. They may need to employ conflict resolution skills to diffuse emergency situations. Documentation is a key aspect of the role, as the officer will investigate and report on accidents, incidents, or suspicious activities, maintaining a daily patrol log to be submitted to the Sergeant or Shift Supervisor. Additional responsibilities include assisting employees, students, and visitors during incidents, managing campus parking issues, and supporting safety teams during emergencies, such as assisting the Trauma Team with helicopter landings. The officer will also enforce no smoking policies on campus and perform other related security and safety duties as assigned, including loss prevention tasks and training new security staff.
