About The Position

The Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery is seeking to hire a Security Officer Sergeant. Under direction of the Chief of Security, performs a variety of security duties for Elizabeth Packard Mental Health Center on an assigned shift. Serves as lead worker to lower-level officers on an assigned shift. Conducts investigations into allegations initiated by patients, staff and/or visitors. Conducts regular patrols of Elizabeth Packard patient units and grounds. Responds to disturbances/assistance codes on patient treatment units. Provides leadership, direction and training in safety and security matters to other departments.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.
  • Requires one (1) year of experience in safety and protection service or a related field.
  • Requires the ability to climb stairs, chase runaways and physically restrain patients as necessary to prevent injury to patient or others.
  • Requires the ability to become OIG rule 50.3 certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Requires the ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to work in a 24 hour “on-call” capacity.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years of experience working with security requirements and regulations for a public or private organization.
  • Three (3) years of experience working with emergency response procedures including fire safety and controls for a public or private organization.
  • Three (3) years of experience participating/conducting investigations into allegations of burglaries, vandalism, patient inquires and traffic accidents.
  • Three (3) years of experience providing leadership, directing, and supervising staff for a public or private organization.
  • Three (3) years of experience providing initial responses to security breaches and safety hazards.
  • Three (3) years of experience preparing reports, communicating effectively both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts investigations into allegations initiated by patients, staff and/or visitors of personal threats, abuse, thefts, burglaries, vandalism, patient injuries, traffic accidents within the guidelines of the Office of Inspector General (OIG) and other regulatory bodies.
  • Serves as designated lead worker.
  • Conducts regular patrols of Elizabeth Packard patient units and grounds.
  • Provides leadership, direction and training in safety and security matters to other departments, i.e. fire procedures, searches for contraband, filing police reports related to criminal assaults and violence in the workplace.
  • Using ID Core System (or similar systems) produces mandated photograph patient identification cards, wrist bands, 295 identification data cards, patient medication administration photographs and staff photograph identification cards. Manages data base, monitors for lost, damaged, or destroyed identification products and facilitate replacement cards.
  • Advises oncoming shift of activities on previous shift.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
