About The Position

The Security Officer I protects the organization's employees, patients, visitors, properties, and all items of value on premises from any preventable harm or danger. This role maintains general order of the local environment and intervenes in disturbances in a calm and efficient manner, guided by courtesy, established rules, and regulations. The officer detects, corrects, reports, investigates, manages, and mitigates safety and security hazards and violations on hospital campuses and off-site properties using appropriate tools, training, and resources. Additionally, the position assists in Incident Command situations, psychiatric patient evaluations and management, duress alarms, conflict situations, and hazardous materials/waste spills, and responds to and assists with all medical emergencies within the scope of the officer's training.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Valid Illinois drivers license.
  • Essentials of Aggression Management (EOAM) certification (within 90 days for Level I).
  • Taser Certification.
  • Basic certification by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (for Level II).
  • Advanced certification by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (for Level III).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to read and write detailed reports.
  • Ability to respond calmly and operate efficiently to emergency and critical confrontations.
  • Professional and courteous when dealing with staff and public of all age groups.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Experience with the public in a service environment (for Level I).
  • FEMA IS- 906: Basic Workplace Security Awareness (within 90 days for Level I).
  • FEMA IS- 907: Active Shooter: What You Can Do (within 90 days for Level I).
  • Completion of handcuff training and demonstration of use according to CMS guidelines (within 90 days for Level I).
  • Completion of SIH Security New Hire Orientation Checklist (within 90 days for Level I).
  • Minimum of 90 days on the job experience (for Level II).
  • NIMS - IS-100a (for Level II).
  • NIMS – IS-200a (for Level II).
  • Completion of all elements of the Competency Assessment for Promotion from Level I to II (for Level II).
  • Minimum of 180 days on the job experience (for Level III).
  • NIMS – IS-700b (for Level III).
  • NIMS – IS-800b (for Level III).
  • Completion of all elements of the Competency Assessment for Promotion from Level II to III (for Level III).

Responsibilities

  • Maintain general order of the local environment and intervene in disturbances calmly and efficiently.
  • Detect, correct, report, investigate, manage, and mitigate safety and security hazards and violations on hospital campuses and off-site properties.
  • Assist in Incident Command situations, psychiatric patient evaluations and management, duress alarms, conflict situations, and hazardous materials/waste spills.
  • Respond and assist with all medical emergencies within the scope of the officer's training.
  • Serve as a physical deterrent and visible presence to maintain safety and security.
  • Respond quickly to highly stressful critical and emergency response situations.
  • Utilize reasonable non-deadly force at the minimal amount necessary to establish and maintain control of a subject in accordance with SIH policy and Illinois State Law.
  • Prioritize calls for service in order of urgency based on safety needs.
  • Confront, assess, and detain unauthorized persons as identified.
  • Monitor the premises by patrolling buildings and property on foot or by vehicle to deter criminal activity.
  • Utilize security monitoring and video surveillance systems to monitor, detect, and respond to security events.
  • Control parking and traffic flow; enforce parking regulations.
  • Maintain access routes and accessibility to Emergency Department and other entrances/exits for patients, visitors, and EMS.
  • Escort personnel to parking lots and hospital buildings as requested.
  • Assist visitors and patients with wayfinding and issue resolution.
  • Provide correctional officers/police officers with forensic education as applicable.
  • Monitor and enforce visitor pass procedures.
  • Monitor radio communications by Switchboard Operator and other Officers to provide assistance as needed.
  • Secure and/or unlock offices and facilities.
  • Maintain records and accurately prepare incident reports and other documents pertinent to security activities and procedures using security management software.
  • Provide secure courier assistance as required.
  • Assist with helicopter transfers and other patient movement as required.
  • Operate and maintain onsite patient transport shuttle as assigned.
  • Complete and pass focused training such as aggression management, hazardous materials/waste, access controls, and decontamination.
  • Actively investigate thefts and respond to other complaints involving potential criminal misconduct (Level II).
  • Coordinate with applicable law enforcement agencies as appropriate (Level II).
  • Utilize and evaluate access management software and provide video footage as required (Level II).
  • Assist Correctional Officers with forensic patients as requested (Level II).
  • Serve as a resource for Security staff on duty when Security Supervisor or Lead is not present (Level III).
  • Serve as a mentor for technical support or guidance at the direction of Supervisor or Lead (Level III).
  • Coordinate work assignments at the direction of Supervisor or Lead (Level III).
  • Serve as an agent of Security by responding to and mitigating complaints as assigned by Supervisor or Lead (Level III).
  • Serve as Safety Officer when Hospital Incident Command is implemented (Level III).
  • Document and log Security Lean Daily Management metrics on PCIB (Level III).
  • Participate in weekly gemba walks (Level III).
  • Maintain Advanced certification by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (Level III).
  • Communicate issues to Supervisor or Lead as needed (Level III).
