Security Center Representatives provide security, safety, and community services to University employees, students, and visitors. As a Security Center Representative, the incumbent is responsible for monitoring and utilizing the campus video surveillance system to deter and provide information regarding criminal and safety incidents, activating the University's emergency notification system, answers calls on the department's main line, and provides assistance or forwards call to the Regional 911 Center as needed, monitors direct and silent emergency alarms notifying responsible parties, and answers non-emergency calls for assistance. The incumbent enters, updates, and retrieves information from various computer systems, receives requests for information regarding vehicle registration, driving records and warrants, student information, and parking information, and provides pertinent data. They also monitor several complex public safety radio frequencies, operate various communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones, and computer systems, and perform clerical and typing duties as required. Incumbents may assist in providing on-the-job training for other Security Center Representatives and submit progress reports and evaluations on trainees. Security Center positions are designated by the university as essential to university operations. As emergency personnel, incumbents are required to report to work during emergency situations, authorized closings, and adverse weather conditions. The incumbents also perform other duties as requested; take initiative to support a healthy work environment; strive to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplify Virginia Tech’s Principles of Community; and support the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience.
  • Significant experience using computers and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to effectively organize, prioritize, and handle several work tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills in person and on the telephone with the ability to speak clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to effectively interact with a diverse clientele.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers, customers, and community members.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and follow policies and procedures.
  • Ability to treat all matters and information as confidential.
  • Ability to work independently and with others in an isolated environment for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends; work on an on-call basis; work irregular duty assignments; and wear a uniform.
  • Ability to report to work during inclement weather and other emergency situations.
  • Candidates for employment are required to have a criminal and credit history check, including fingerprinting.
  • Successful completion of a psychological assessment is required.
  • Incumbents are subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug and alcohol screening.
  • State law requires the successful candidate to be a U.S. citizen or have been a lawful resident of the U.S. for the past 10 consecutive years.
  • Selected applicants must become VCIN/NCIC certified within the first year of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree and/or equivalent training/experience with law enforcement, security, communications or corrections.
  • Experience operating a variety of communication hardware such as phone, two-way radio, or paging systems in a high-volume environment.
  • Experience dispatching law enforcement, fire and/or emergency medical services.
  • Experience answering complaints and providing information in a public contact environment.
