About The Position

This open competitive advertisement is for a Career Service position located at Central Office in Tallahassee, FL in the Bureau of Security Operations. The mission of the Bureau of Security Operations in the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) is to ensure the safety and security of correctional facilities, staff, inmates, and the public. This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a shift supervisor or higher within the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) or another federal, state, or county correctional agency. (The shift supervisor ranks within FDC are Lieutenant and Captain. Other agency rank structures may differ and will be considered individually.)
  • Must possess strong organizational skills as well as strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Direct experience with coordinating, conducting or compiling security audits and operational reviews in a correctional environment.
  • Experience with collecting, evaluating and analyzing data and using operational data base systems.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts comprehensive unannounced security audits at all correctional institutions to verify that physical security barriers and electronic intrusion devices are properly installed and in good working order.
  • Reviews routine and emergency security practices to ensure that the staff is responsive, well trained, and in control of the environment.
  • Inspects security control systems pertaining to tools, keys, weapons, sensitive items, and other areas to ensure compliance with departmental policies and effective resource management.
  • Responsible for leading teams that conduct comprehensive security assessments of major institutions, work camps, and community facilities for the operational review process.
  • During operational reviews, ensures that physical security barriers and electronic intrusions devices are properly installed and in good working order.
  • Conducts additional on-site assistance when requested by the region or institutions to review various perimeter security components, i.e., security alert systems, cameras and fencing.
  • Inspects security control systems pertaining to tools, keys, weapons, sensitive items, and other areas to ensure compliance with departmental policies and effective resource management.
  • Analyzes corrective action plans to ensure deficiencies are properly resolved and addressed within reasonable timeframes.
  • Conducts follow-up assessments to verify corrective action and assists in the resolving of difficult situations.
  • Coordinates training for institutional staff relative to identified and new security related issues and requirements to include curriculum development, site identification, and arrangements for trainers.
  • Responds to institutional security issues telephoned into the office by Correctional Administrators.
  • Accomplishes tasks listed on the task list by promulgating new rules and procedures, investigating new products, researching information, and compiling analytical data.
  • Assists in the development of departmental security standards and practices and participates in the correctional work teams that address security issues and institutional operations.
  • Conducts special security audits as directed by the Secretary.
  • Provides technical assistance to regions and institutions on security matters.
  • Reviews routine and emergency security practices to ensure that the staff is responsive, well trained, and in control of the environment.
  • May act as the Bureau’s liaison in matters related but not limited to inmate work squads, roster management, policy review and development, ACA, and public records requests.
