About The Position

The Washington State Attorney General's Office is looking for an attorney to serve as Section Chief in the Bankruptcy and Collections Unit (BCU) in downtown Seattle, WA. BCU is comprised of three attorneys and five professional staff. The unit encourages voluntary compliance with the state's tax laws by supporting the efforts of state agencies to aggressively pursue money owed to the state. Most of the money is owed for delinquent sales and business and occupation taxes, industrial insurance premiums and unemployment fund contributions. The BCU gives priority to representing the departments of Revenue, Labor & Industries and Employment Security in bankruptcy cases. The Section Chief of the Bankruptcy & Collection Unit manages two attorneys and five support staff. BCU primarily represents the three state tax agencies and the Division of Child Support in bankruptcy cases nationwide. The Unit provides legal advice and training for the agencies' bankruptcy practice and collection efforts, represents the state tax agencies in state court litigation primarily regarding collection on bonds, and provides assistance to AAGs in other divisions. This position is assigned to the Bankruptcy and Collections Unit of the Revenue & Finance Division and manages the BCU. The Section Chief is responsible for BCU's budget and supervises all BCU employees. This position also provides client advice, litigation support, and training on bankruptcy and collection matters to the Departments of Revenue, Employment Security, Labor & Industries, and Division of Child Support. The Section Chief supports the AGO's mission by contributing high quality, independent legal representation to our clients with the highest standards of excellence, ethics, and effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program
  • Be licensed to practice law in Washington State. (Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission will also be considered.)
  • The AGO seeks applicants who are committed to public service as demonstrated by an applicant's background, talents, attitude, and enthusiasm for public law practice.

Nice To Haves

  • Be knowledgeable about bankruptcy and collections laws, garnishments, federal and state court practice and procedure, child support law, and state tax agency collection practices.
  • Have experience in motion practice and presenting oral arguments in the superior/bankruptcy courts
  • Have excellent writing, editing, communication, listening, and interpersonal skills
  • Be good with numbers in terms of budgets and debt determinations.
