About The Position

Hinds Community College is seeking a qualified and motivated Secondary Welding Instructor to join our Career and Technical Education team. The instructor will deliver high-quality instruction in welding processes and techniques to high school students enrolled in dual credit/dual enrollment courses, preparing them for successful careers and industry certification in welding and fabrication.

Requirements

  • Applicants with an associate degree must have at least two years of verifiable occupational experience in the past ten years. Experience must be appropriate to the subject to be taught.
  • Applicants with a bachelor or higher degree must have at least one year of verifiable occupational experience in the past ten years. Experience must be appropriate to the subject to be taught. An educator with a standard five - year license may use experience outside of the ten - year timeframe.
  • Applicant must earn a passing score on a Welding (performance & written) Assessment: TOCA at RCU-Welding or hold American Welding Society (AWS) Certification or NCCER welding assessment. The performance assessment should include successful completion of seven test plates out of the fourteen test plates listed in the curriculum (please see curriculum for list).
  • Other teacher occupational competency assessment approved by MDE Office of Career and Technical Education
  • Manage high school students and maintain a professional environment.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches high school students the occupational competencies necessary for employment.
  • Keep prompt, up-to-date, accurate records of attendance, grades, and other reports.
  • Prepares course competency-based outlines for each instructional course or program.
  • Prepares detailed lesson plans, job sheets, and laboratory experiments for all units of instruction.
  • Recommends changes in the total curriculum in order to maintain and up-to-date program.
  • Develops and maintains the progress of each student in the program.
  • Teaches related subject matter.
  • Develops a schedule of courses for each semester.
  • Reviews and selects instructional materials such as textbooks and audio visual materials.
  • Completes requests for supplies and other instructional materials on a timely basis.
  • Completes enrollment and follow up reports.
  • Assists in the development of an annual budget for the instructional program.
  • Maintains a clean and safe laboratory environment.
  • Recommends new and/or replacement equipment to be purchased for the new program.
  • Maintains proper inventory of all equipment and tools assigned to the program.
  • Keeps equipment functioning and in good working order by establishing an effective preventive maintenance system.
  • Maintains an active advisory committee.
  • Maintains a good industry relationship for the purpose of student placement for potential employees and donations.
  • Takes an active role in the advisement, counseling of students and register students.
  • Helps students find employment in an occupation related to training.
  • Fulfils the requirements of a technical certification by attending specified classes and workshops.
  • Serves on various faculty committees.
  • Attends faculty meeting and professional development workshops and training.
  • Issue to students a course syllabus or policy letter at the beginning of the semester and objective sheets for each unit of the course during the semester.
  • Keep classes in session for the full scheduled time. (Classes identified in the schedule as independent study classes will meet according to requirements of the instructor.)
  • Set aside sufficient time for student conferences, guidance, and tutorial assistance. (Minimum of 6 hours per week required)
  • Follow the required institutional process for recording student attendance and identifying "no-shows" in a timely manner.
  • Participate in student/teacher and faculty/administrator evaluations and performance review conferences.
  • Meet reporting requirements of the State Office of Vocational Technical Education.
  • Develop a personal and professional improvement plan in those areas deemed necessary as a result of evaluations.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, formulation, execution, and evaluations of departmental goals and objectives.
  • Cooperate in the execution of the college, division, and department policies.
  • Participate in staff development activities, professional associations, presentations, publications, applied educational research, consulting, evaluations, and similar activities which enhance the individual and the education profession.
  • Use teaching techniques that include the effective utilization of resources that motivate students to achieve their potential.
  • Present a personal appearance in keeping with contemporary community standards for a professional person.
  • Maintain current credentials and certifications as required in respective field.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the appropriate authority.
