About The Position

Muskegon Catholic Central in Muskegon is seeking a dedicated and student-focused Secondary School Counselor (Grades 7–12) to support the academic and spiritual growth of our secondary students. Rooted in Catholic identity and guided by Catholic Social Teaching, the school counselor fosters a faith-centered environment that respects the dignity of every person, promotes service to others, and prepares students for responsible Catholic identity driven citizenship. The ideal candidate is passionate about academic counseling, helping students navigate course selection, monitor academic progress, set postsecondary goals, and develop effective study and organizational skills. Using best practices aligned with the ASCA National Model, the counselor collaborates with faculty, families, and the community to advocate for students, support their holistic (spirit, mind, and body) development, and ensure equitable access to academic opportunities. Position Overview: The MCC School Counselor (Grades 7–12) is guided by best practices outlined by the American School Counselor Association, the counselor implements a comprehensive school counseling program that provides leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote access to academic opportunities and student support. The counselor delivers direct and indirect services including individual student planning, responsive services, and developmental academic planning programs, while partnering with faculty, families, and community members to ensure that student services reflect both professional counseling standards and the mission and identity of Catholic education. Their growth as learners, leaders, and disciples is a priority.

Requirements

  • Commitment to Catholic education and Catholic Social Teaching
  • Experience in academic advising or school counseling, preferably at the secondary level.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master’s degree in school counseling is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic counseling to help students select courses, monitor progress, and plan for postsecondary education.
  • Support students’ social-emotional and spiritual development through individual and small-group counseling.
  • Implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the ASCA National Model.
  • Advocate for students and collaborate with faculty, families, and community partners to ensure equitable access to academic opportunities.
  • Assist students in developing study, organizational, and goal-setting skills to enhance success in school and life.
  • Promote Catholic identity and values through programming, mentoring, and guidance aligned with the mission of the school.
