About The Position

The Secondary English Language Arts Coordinator assumes the responsibility for curriculum development and instructional coordination of English Language Arts 6-12.

Requirements

  • A minimum of five years of successful teaching and leadership experience in public education, three years of which shall have been in a leadership capacity.
  • Eligible for a Collegiate Professional license with an endorsement in the assigned field of instruction (preferred endorsement in Administration and Supervision)
  • Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments to improve instructional practices.
  • Proficiency in the use of a variety of office equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, email, and information system applications.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.
  • Proficiency in business English: spelling, grammar, and spoken language.
  • Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns.
  • Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, co-workers, and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Creates and updates curriculum guides and division assessments aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning, district policies, state and federal regulations, current research, and best practices in the field.
  • Support building-level accountability by providing timely disaggregated data and analysis of state and division assessments, participating in quarterly data meetings, and providing instructional feedback.
  • Collaborate with Central Office and building administrators to support federal and state ESSA expectations and reporting documentation.
  • Coordinates and facilitates professional learning and ongoing coaching to build teacher knowledge, skills, and capacity with effective secondary English Language Arts (ELA) instruction.
  • Serve as a liaison with VDOE to ensure compliance with updates, changes, and announcements. Ensure that this information is shared quickly and accurately with supervisors.
  • Attend to the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) updates and changes, ensuring alignment with curriculum, instruction, and interventions.
  • Support district and school-level Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) as it pertains to ELA in grades 6-12.
  • Manage a budget to facilitate equitable distribution of instructional materials and teacher professional development across secondary schools.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with principals, ELA department leaders, and PLCs/CLTs.
  • Assesses existing instructional programs and identifies curriculum needs in collaboration with principals and teachers in the areas of secondary ELA.
  • Develops systems and procedures that ensure all students are learning to high levels and are given opportunities to learn in a creative and innovative learning environment
  • Keeps abreast of current research and practices in secondary ELA.
  • Interprets educational philosophy, instructional programs, and policies of the school division in areas of primary function to staff, parents, and citizens.
  • Informs the Director of Innovation for Instruction and Leadership of the progress, effectiveness, and needs of the division's instructional programs in the area of secondary ELA.
  • Coordinates and oversees textbook adoptions and supplementary materials procurement, including online platforms, for secondary ELA.
  • Develops and monitors the instructional budget for secondary ELA.
  • Provides support and resources in the area of ELA to secondary teachers and principals.
  • Periodically attends school board meetings and provides reports on the status of programs and services in areas of primary function at the request of the Chief Academic Officer.
  • Assists in the selection of personnel and their assignment in the primary area of responsibility.
  • Has the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions, including non-discriminatory and cultural inclusion practices by respecting the worth, dignity, and individual beliefs of others.
  • Takes all industry-standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  • Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  • Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  • Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
  • Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
  • Effectively performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Innovation for Instruction & Leadership
