About The Position

Position contingent on grant funding (Read and Lead Grant). OVERVIEW: The Content Area Literacy Coach supports instructional excellence in science by coaching educators, leading professional learning, and fostering data-driven collaboration to improve student literacy outcomes. The focus of this role is to ensure alignment with High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM), curriculum standards, and district priorities, enhancing student outcomes through collaborative planning and instructional modeling and coaching. The Content Area Literacy Coach leads professional development sessions; and will teach, model, co-teach, support in a classroom, or provide targeted literacy instruction for students 50% of the time.

Requirements

  • Must hold or be eligible for a Maryland professional certificate/license in (a) Middle School Science 4-9 or a Secondary Science 7-12 content area with an ELA/English literacy background OR (b) Middle School English 4-9 or English 7-12 with a science background.
  • Five (5) years’ experience as an effective classroom teacher as demonstrated by student proficiency and growth data.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Experience with Maryland Common Core Readiness Standards, the Science of Reading and MCAP Assessments.

Nice To Haves

  • Reading Teacher or Reading Specialist endorsement preferred.
  • Applicants working on National Board Certification in Literacy or in a Master's program for Reading may also qualify.
  • Completed Science of Reading training is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with science teachers to improve literacy instruction, particularly for multilingual learners and struggling readers.
  • Provide personalized coaching to non-tenured teachers, helping them implement best practices in literacy instruction.
  • Provide targeted strategies for teachers to support multilingual.
  • Model best literacy practices through demonstration lessons and co-teaching.
  • Design and deliver high-impact professional development sessions focused on literacy strategies, instructional rigor, and student engagement.
  • Facilitate job-embedded learning experiences such as PLCs, data analysis protocols, lesson planning, and peer collaboration.
  • Guide educators in analyzing formative, summative, and diagnostic assessment.
  • Support collaborative planning that integrates content, assessment, and differentiation strategies for diverse learners.
  • Model, co-plan, co-teach, to provide direct instruction to students with a focus on intervention, enrichment, targeted support and demonstrating best practices in teaching literacy.
  • Partner with district secondary ELA supervisor, Science supervisor, school administrators and instructional leadership teams to support school literacy improvement goals.
  • Provide personalized coaching to non-tenured teachers, helping them implement best practices in literacy instruction within their content areas.
  • Support district-wide instructional initiatives in literacy.
  • Stay informed on education trends and research and participate in professional development and trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
