About the position

As a Second Line Risk Advisor - Data Risk Management (Sr. Risk Manager) at Capital One, you will be acting as a trusted data risk advisor to divisions (first line business units) and technology partners. You will leverage your deep expertise in data risk management to provide effective challenges, ensuring the company's data management practices align with both regulatory requirements and enterprise risk appetite. This role is an opportunity to take on key responsibilities in identifying potential data risks, influencing key stakeholders, and including leading a team responsible for assessing data risk across Capital One divisions. As part of the second line of defense, you will engage with product and technology partners, providing insight and influencing the integration of data risk controls into day-to-day operations. You'll bring a proactive, innovative mindset to designing processes and performing risk assessments to safeguard Capital One's data management environment.

Responsibilities

  • Build strong relationships with business and technology partners to become a trusted data risk advisor, providing insight into data risks and shaping risk mitigation strategies across the enterprise.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments, data process and control design, and advocate for process excellence to enhance the organization's data management risk posture.
  • Identify opportunities to embed data risk management best practices within business operations, influencing stakeholders to adopt proactive risk management measures.
  • Collaborate with Product and Technology teams to ensure data management controls are incorporated into technical product roadmaps, driving effective risk mitigation in new and existing platforms.
  • Perform gap assessments to identify weaknesses in current data management controls/processes and propose actionable recommendations to drive organizational transformation and compliance.
  • Utilize strong verbal and written communication skills to articulate data management risks, communicate progress against risk mitigation efforts, and influence decision-making at senior levels.
  • Partner across divisions and functions on initiatives related to metadata management, data quality, data governance, and data stewardship to ensure risks are mitigated and compliance is maintained.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or military experience
  • At least 5 years of experience in data management or data governance role
  • At least 5 years of experience in risk management within a FinTech, Financial Services, or Technology organization

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Business Management, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Mathematics
  • At least 3 years of experience leading cross-functional teams
  • At least 5 years of experience overseeing metadata management and data quality
