Seasonal Zookeeper Intern
About The Position
This seasonal Zookeeper Intern position with the City of Hutchinson offers an opportunity to contribute to the community's livability and safety by working with animals. The role involves observing and interpreting animal behaviors, health status, and food consumption, and advising supervisory staff of any problems. Key responsibilities include providing animals with adequate diets, fresh water, and enrichment activities to maintain their physical and psychological well-being, as well as ensuring proper habitats for mammals, reptiles, and birds. The intern will also be responsible for maintaining indoor and outdoor cages, enclosures, exhibits, holding cages, and service areas through cleaning, disinfecting, and general maintenance. Additionally, the position includes executing behavior modification and enrichment activities, providing interactive items to relieve stress and boredom, and assisting with informational, promotional, and educational opportunities for zoo visitors.
Requirements
- Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within two weeks of employment
- Employee must possess a valid Driver's License
Nice To Haves
- Preference will be give to applicants pursuing education in the zoological or related field
- Animal experience is preferred
Responsibilities
- Observes and interprets animal behaviors, health status, and food consumption; advises supervisory staff of problems or concerns
- Provides animals with adequate diets, fresh water and activities to maintain animal physical and psychological well-being; and provides animals with activity and enrichment opportunities
- Providing proper habitats for mammals, reptiles and birds
- Weighing animals
- Maintains indoor and outdoor cages, enclosures, exhibits, holding cages and service areas by cleaning, disinfecting and performing general maintenance to these areas as needed
- Executes behavior modification and enrichment activities for animals
- Provides animal with interactive items and activities to relieve stress and boredom; and provide exercise for animals as needed
- Performs preventative or routine maintenance of animal environments including collection, installation, and/or maintenance of furnishings and substrates
- May assist with planting of landscape materials
- Assists in providing zoo visitors informational, promotional, and educational opportunities
