About The Position

The City of Gig Harbor is recruiting Temporary Seasonal Workers to support our Public Works Operations and Wastewater teams during the upcoming summer season, with positions beginning as early as late April. These temporary assignments typically run through October (up to six months), depending on operational needs, weather conditions, and employee availability. Seasonal Workers play an important role in helping maintain the services and spaces our community relies on every day. Employees can expect a full-time schedule of approximately 40 hours per week, including a combination of weekday, weekend, and holiday shifts. Our management team works closely with each employee to establish a consistent schedule that supports both operational needs and personal commitments. Why Gig Harbor? POSITION OVERVIEW The seasonal worker performs physical manual labor, public restroom cleaning, trash removal, weed eating, blowing, edging, and preventative maintenance tasks for the public works department. This position is a temporary, seasonal work assignment between April – November with training provided upon hire.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Steel-toed boots are required while working and need to be supplied by the employee.
  • A valid Washington State driver’s license (or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire) and two years of driving experience.
  • A history of and ability to maintain safe and responsible driving that meets the city’s motor vehicle record minimum driving requirements.
  • Ability to pass position relevant pre-employment screening.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans roadside ditches, culverts, and catch basins.
  • Assists in the maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and storm systems.
  • Cuts brush, weeds, and bushes, and performs planting and transplanting, weeding, mowing, raking, shoveling, pruning, and maintaining trees, shrubs, and flower beds as directed.
  • Once trained, may operate hand tools, compressors, pneumatic tools, paint equipment, power tools, pressure washers, and other tools needed to complete tasks.
  • Once trained, may operate a wide variety of light equipment such as a light duty truck, mower, backpack blower, weed eater, sod cutter, edger, chainsaw, and flatbed truck.
  • Maintains punctual and reliable attendance.
  • Performs parks and grounds maintenance functions including cleaning restrooms, applying beauty bark, weeding landscaped areas, washing vehicles, preparing for painting, and maintaining buildings.
  • Assists in providing support for special events.
  • Performs grounds maintenance located at the wastewater treatment plant and lift stations including vegetation pruning, applying beauty bark, weeding landscaped areas, mowing lawns, washing vehicles, pressure washing, painting, and maintaining buildings.
  • Building maintenance such as cleaning windows, dusting equipment, vacuuming etc.
