About The Position

Primary Purpose: The Senior Wildlife Center Specialist is responsible for the care and rehabilitation of wildlife, ensuring their health and safety. This role involves providing medical treatment, monitoring animal health, and maintaining clean and safe habitats. Additionally, the Wildlife Center Specialist educates the public about wildlife conservation and supports efforts to protect local ecosystems. Essential Functions of the Position: Assist the Wildlife Care Coordinator with maintaining medical inventory and ordering medications and medical supplies. Assist the Wildlife Care Coordinator with supporting, promoting and enforcing SOPs as implemented by the Wildlife Center Director. Assist the Wildlife Center Director and Wildlife Care Coordinator to implement and assess animal treatment plans. Care for, feed, water and observe animal patients. Report observed health or behavior issues. Maintain all animal enclosures and ensure assigned areas are properly cleaned and disinfected daily. Administer medications and maintain medical observation records as required. Maintain detailed notes in departmental logs and report as appropriate. Follow detailed protocols for animal care and admittance. Mentor and monitor volunteers, interns and apprentices to assure the quality of care is maintained Operate hotline during assigned shifts. Monitor current inventory of necessary program supplies and notify supervisors of immediate needs. Protect all confidential information, including customers, donors, animals and internal communications. Represent the Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas by providing excellent customer service and focus. Ensure public facing areas are neat and clean at all times. Work within the laws and protocols established by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Maintain a professional, neat and well kempt appearance at all times. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position: High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of two years of related working experience. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Understanding of the mission of the Houston SPCA & WCT. Knowledge of Houston SPCA partners and products/services they offer. Knowledge of the Houston SPCA policies and protocols, such as, but not limited to admitting, cleaning and medical protocols. Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior. Ability to handle animals safely, with patience and gentleness. Ability to represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff. Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Houston SPCA, with volunteers and the public and be a team player. Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions. Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and electronic form. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively. Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures. Valid Texas Driver’s License and a good driving record is optimum.
