About The Position

If you are passionate about Nebraska’s weirdities and wonderments and all our great state has to offer, the Nebraska Tourism Commission would like you to be part of their Seasonal Travel Counselor team! Temporary part-time seasonal positions are available to staff travel counselors at Interstate 80 visitor centers and other Tourism Commission designated facilities during the 2026 travel season to influence unplanned stops by travelers in Nebraska. Temporary part-time seasonal positions are available from May 13, 2026 to September 13, 2026 at The Archway (Kearney), Blue River Eastbound (Milford), Brady Westbound, Brownville Welcome Center, Kearney Welcome Center, Lewis & Clark Interpretive Trails & Visitor Center (Nebraska City), Melia Hill Westbound (Gretna), Ogallala Eastbound, Sgt. Floyd Welcome Center (Sioux City, Iowa), and York Westbound. Travel counselors must have a positive and friendly attitude, enjoy working with the traveling public, possess a good knowledge of Nebraska's tourism opportunities, and the ability to provide own transportation to work site. Travel counselors cannot work more than 32 hours per week. Applicants who are selected to be a travel counselor for the 2026 travel season will be required to attend an orientation meeting in Kearney on Wednesday, May 13th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the Buffalo Room of the Kearney Welcome Center (220 11th Ave., Kearney). An alternate orientation meeting will take place Friday, May 15th in Lincoln at 1527 K Street in the Human Resources office from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Applicants that cannot make either meeting will need to complete their necessary paperwork with Human Resources no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 15th in Lincoln at the Human Resources office, 1527 K Street.

Requirements

  • Experience in public contact OR coursework/training or experience in history, art history, recreation, event planning, or areas related to Nebraska history, geography, or culture.
  • Applicants must be capable of lifting at least 40 pounds.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • Knowledge of Nebraska's historical, cultural, and recreational facilities, and geography.
  • Ability to organize material and present information in a variety of forms and work well with people.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting travelers with travel plans, including offering route suggestions
  • Making lodging reservations
  • Maintaining travel literature and accurate records throughout the season
  • Creating a positive image of Nebraska for visitors
