JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of assigned staff, the Summer Seasonal Crew member performs a variety of manual labor duties in support of the care, maintenance, and operation of district grounds and facilities. Responsibilities include groundskeeping, general facility support, and the moving, transporting, set-up, and storage of district furniture, equipment, and supplies. Season: Approximately mid-May through mid-August Hours: Full-time, generally 40 hours per week; schedule may vary and may include early mornings Pay Classification: Seasonal, non-exempt (hourly); not eligible for district benefits QUALIFICATIONS High School diploma or equivalent Previous experience in grounds maintenance or related work preferred Valid Iowa driver’s license Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES Perform routine grounds maintenance tasks, including but not limited to, mowing, trimming, weeding, watering, and general site clean-up Assist with the care and upkeep of district buildings and facilities, including support for summer maintenance and improvement projects Maintain and perform minor repairs to playgrounds and associated equipment Perform general parking lot maintenance Safely operate, transport, and maintain a variety of groundskeeping machinery, equipment and tools Assist with room resets and building preparations, including the moving, transporting, set-up, and storage of furniture, equipment, and instructional materials Load, unload, and transport furniture, equipment, and supplies between district buildings and work sites Serve as an escort to contractors performing work on district property Ensure assigned work orders are completed accurately and in a timely manner Work collaboratively with district staff and supervisors Follow all safety procedures and demonstrate safe work practices at all times Complete all required training and certifications Perform other job-related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES Knowledge of and the ability to safely operate a variety of vehicles, machinery, powered equipment and tools Ability to read and understand technical manuals, safety manuals, and work instructions Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills Ability to maintain accurate records and complete work documentation Initiative and ability to work with limited supervision In evaluating candidates for this position, Johnston Community School District may consider a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT Frequent walking, standing, squatting, crouching, kneeling and bending Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 lbs. regularly and over 50 lbs. occasionally Ability to push, pull and reach above shoulder level Moderate exposure to noise greater than 85dB Primarily outdoor work environment with exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat and cold Exposure to fumes, odors, chemicals, and dust Regularly work in close proximity to moving machinery and equipment
