About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to assist in the day-to-day operations and activities of the city’s Aquatic, Athletic, and Recreation departments. This position will also support and participate in special events throughout the year, as needed. This position is designed to ensure and maintain a safe and welcoming environment of all patrons throughout the city’s Parks and Recreations division during high peak seasons. Positions allocated to this classification will report to a designated supervisor but may work under direct or limited supervision.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school diploma or GED equivalency
  • 6mths minimum experience in recreation and/or customer service with cash handling; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check
  • Able to pass pre-employment physical examination required
  • American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in Adult, Child and Infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), AED and First Aid is required and must be completed before start of season.
  • Basic lifeguard skills/duties.
  • Good customer service and people skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Requires the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment; Must be flexible and able to adapt to frequent changes in work priorities.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee may operate objects, tools, or controls or lift, carry or move up to average 75 pounds.
  • Work requires physical strength and agility to safely perform all essential functions.
  • Will perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions including working around chemicals and in extreme heat.

Nice To Haves

  • Lifeguard experience and proficiency in swimming preferred.
  • Valid and current Lifeguard Training Certification a plus.
  • Knowledge of water chemistry preferred.
  • Skill in teaching swimming classes a plus.
  • Ability to demonstrate swimming proficiency.
  • Ability to handle rescue activities.
  • Be able to identify problems either visually or by auditory means in order to be alert to life-saving needs.

Responsibilities

  • Work as team with seasonal, part-time and volunteer staff under the direction of supervisor on duty.
  • Monitor designated site to ensure all policies, rules, and regulations are being followed by participants; assisting in response to situations involving excessive noise, inappropriate language/actions, disruptive behavior, or other problems escalating to designated supervisor when necessary.
  • Always Inspecting proper water chemistry and levels; reporting to site lead or supervisor when necessary.
  • Collects and records daily cash payments ensuring proper levels of cash and change on hand.
  • Provide excellent customer service by greeting patrons, answering questions, assisting with rentals, provides informationregarding recreation, aquatic and athletic programs, activities, facilities, schedules, fees, and related issues.
  • Ensure safety by maintaining active observation and patrol of assigned areas until relieved or dismissed, enforcing all facility rules and regulations consistently.
  • Maintain familiarity with emergency action plan/rescue plans at assigned facility and responding appropriately to incidents or emergencies in accordance with established procedures.
  • Support facility operations by working assigned shifts (including events, rentals, and meets), assisting with recreational programs.
  • Attends and participates in all staff trainings, meetings and assigned guard drills.
  • Maintain cleanliness and functionality of the facility by performing routine upkeep, sanitizing equipment, and ensuring all areas remain clean, safe, and operational.
  • Assist with equipment and maintenance tasks, including setup, inspection, reporting major repairs needed, and ensuring proper use of recreational equipment.
  • Responsible for monitoring inventory of supplies, requesting when appropriate.
  • Complete administrative and operational duties by maintaining records, tracking guest attendance and incidents, processing waivers, and supporting opening and closing procedures.
  • Monitors individuals or organizations using recreation facilities or participating in recreational programs; Serves as an attendant; assisting with event or class setup; assists in explaining rules, regulations, and policies to program participants.
  • Communicates with supervisor, other departments, employees, as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
