About The Position

Under general direction, the employee will be responsible for assisting in the administration of various recreational and sports activities in the Parks & Recreation Department. Recreation aides prepare all resources, guide participants, maintain activity equipment, facilitate programs, and reiterate guidelines for the safe execution of activities. They also ensure the cleanliness and orderliness of the facilities to be used.

Requirements

  • Effectively supervise a wide range of recreation positions.
  • Assist the Recreation Supervisor in scheduling, planning, and organizing events and programming.
  • Conduct work in a safe manner in accordance with established policy.
  • Clearly demonstrate responsibility, motivation, and leadership.
  • Be familiar with all types of sports, crafts, and games; familiarity with first aid; to comprehend, remember and follow detailed oral directions; and to understand and carry out written directions.
  • Read, write, understand and communicate in the English language sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Demonstrate an interest in recreation work; show creativity; be reliable; get along well with others; show initiative, patience, tact, and resourcefulness; and maintain a physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.
  • Communicate clearly concisely, and courteously, orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • 2+ years supervising recreation programs
  • Possession of current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certifications
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, lift 50 lbs.; withstand exposure to heat, noise, and other attendant environmental indoor and outdoor conditions; knowledge of related hazardous materials, potentially dangerous chemicals, and blood borne pathogens.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that facilities are clean and safe for users by performing routine maintenance on equipment and facility grounds.
  • Providing first aid to injured persons until emergency medical personnel arrive.
  • Supervise youth, adult and senior activities to ensure safety, provide guidance, and ensure appropriate behavior of class or program participants.
  • Scheduling activities and promote programs to encourage participation in recreational activities.
  • Preparing reports on division activities such as participation rates or program attendance.
  • Performing clerical duties, including, but not limited to: maintaining files, answering phones, and typing letters.
  • Dressing appropriately for their work environment according to facility policies or best practices for the industry.
  • Organizing and running activities such as arts and crafts, sports leagues, and summer camps.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations such as checking for equipment defects before allowing participants to use a piece of equipment.
