About The Position

The City of Astoria is looking for a hard-working and motivated individuals to work on maintenance, repair, painting and landscaping work for the Public Works Operations division. This position may work individually with minimum supervision or as a member of a crew. This position supports operations which provide critical city services to the community. This is a seasonal position that works 4 days per week, 8:00AM-4:30PM for a total of 16 days per month. The total hours budgeted for the entire season is 1,000 hours. The start date will be scheduled as soon as the interview and background process is completed. Applications are being reviewed on an ongoing basis and the recruitment may close early. Requirements

  • Ability to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to safety or health of employee or others.

  • Experience using hand and power tools and operation of lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Experience driving a vehicle pulling a trailer.
  • Possession of a valid Oregon Driver's license; safe driving record.
  • Ability to pass a Post-job offer background check (including state and federal criminal records, social security number trace, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check).

Responsibilities

  • Performs manual and semiskilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of Public Works buildings and grounds, trails, streets, barricades, water system and sewer system; does related work as required.
  • Maintains grounds of Public Works facilities, reservoirs, pump stations, headworks and shops by mowing, weeding, edging, pruning, and spraying for weed control.
  • Constructs, maintains and repairs barricades, both stationary and portable.
  • Maintains trails by cutting brush, spraying weeds, applying gravel, and repairing steps and handrails.
  • Paints hydrants, traffic lines and symbols on city streets.
  • Paints, cleans and maintains city buildings.
  • Acts as a crew member in the repair and maintenance of sewer and water lines as needed.
  • Repairs and installs street signs.
  • Cuts brush and trims trees along roads, around hydrants and at storm sewer inlets.
  • Applies cold patch to streets as necessary.
  • Assists in Public Works office with phones, radio and clerical duties as needed.
  • Maintains punctual, regular and predictable attendance
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Displays excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with coworkers and including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.
  • Respectfully takes direction from supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.
