About The Position

Park Rangers assist Park Managers by providing protection of park patrons and park property. Park Rangers explain park and recreation rules and regulations and seek voluntary compliance and patrol through assigned areas such as campgrounds, beaches, cabin areas, marinas, trails, gorges, picnic areas and comfort stations. They respond to patron inquiries, provide information on the natural resources, facilities, recreational activities and the condition and accessibility of trails and other facility resources. Park Rangers are subject to the provisions of the Security Guard Act of 1993, are unarmed and have neither peace nor police officer status. This is a seasonal-only position, generally from late May to Labor Day. POSITIONS AVAILABLE Positions for Park Rangers exist in all regions in the Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, which include: Allegany, Central, Finger Lakes, Genesee, Long Island, New York City, Niagara, Palisades, Saratoga, Taconic and Thousand Islands. Central Region Includes: Artpark State Park, Beaver Island State Park and Golf Course, Big Six Mile Creek Marina, Buckhorn Island State Park, Buffalo Harbor State Park, DeVeaux Woods State Park, Devil's Hole State Park, Evangola State Park, Fort Niagara State Park, Four Mile Creek State Park, Golden Hill State Park, Joseph Davis State Park, Knox Farm State Park, Niagara Fall State Park, Reservoir State Park, Whirlpool State Park, Wilson-Tuscarora State Park, and Woodlawn Beach State Park

Requirements

  • be at least age 18 at time of appointment
  • have a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • have a valid NYS Drivers License when required to drive state vehicles
  • meet certain physical and medical requirements
  • be of good moral character and successfully complete a background investigation
  • successfully complete 24 hours of Security Guard training provided by NYS Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation
  • Possess basic computer and smartphone skills
  • Have a valid NYS issued ID
