About The Position

Park Rangers assist Park Managers by providing protection of park patrons and park property. Park Rangers explain park and recreation rules and regulations and seek voluntary compliance and patrol through assigned areas such as campgrounds, beaches, cabin areas, marinas, trails, gorges, picnic areas and comfort stations. They respond to patron inquiries, provide information on the natural resources, facilities, recreational activities and the condition and accessibility of trails and other facility resources. Park Rangers are subject to the provisions of the Security Guard Act of 1993, are unarmed and have neither peace nor police officer status. This is a seasonal-only position, generally from late May to Labor Day. POSITIONS AVAILABLE Positions for Park Rangers exist in all regions in the Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, which include: Allegany, Central, Finger Lakes, Genesee, Long Island, New York City, Niagara, Palisades, Saratoga, Taconic and Thousand Islands. Central Region Includes: Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park, Belmont Lake State Park, Bethpage State Park, Brentwood State Park, Brookhaven State Park, Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, Camp Hero State Park, Captree State Park, Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve, Cold Spring Harbor State Park, Connetquot River State Park Preserve, Gilgo State Park, Hallock State Park Preserve, Heckscher State Park, Hempstead Lake State Park, Hither Hills State Park, Jones Beach State Park, Montauk Downs State Park, Montauk Point State Park, Nissequogue River State Park, Orient Beach State Park, Robert Moses State Park - Long Island, Shadmoor State Park, Sunken Meadow State Park (Governor Alfred E. Smith), Trail View State Park, Valley Stream State Park, Wildwood State Park

Requirements

  • be at least age 18 at time of appointment
  • have a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • have a valid NYS Drivers License when required to drive state vehicles
  • meet certain physical and medical requirements
  • be of good moral character and successfully complete a background investigation
  • successfully complete 24 hours of Security Guard training provided by NYS Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation
  • Possess basic computer and smartphone skills
  • Have a valid NYS issued ID
  • Candidates are required to pay for background fingerprinting ($101.75) and NYS Security Guard License Application Fee ($36).
