About The Position

Park Rangers assist Park Managers by providing protection of park patrons and park property. Park Rangers explain park and recreation rules and regulations and seek voluntary compliance and patrol through assigned areas such as campgrounds, beaches, cabin areas, marinas, trails, gorges, picnic areas and comfort stations. They respond to patron inquiries, provide information on the natural resources, facilities, recreational activities and the condition and accessibility of trails and other facility resources. Park Rangers are subject to the provisions of the Security Guard Act of 1993, are unarmed and have neither peace nor police officer status. This is a seasonal-only position, generally from late May to Labor Day. POSITIONS AVAILABLE Positions for Park Rangers exist in all regions in the Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, which include: Allegany, Central, Finger Lakes, Genesee, Long Island, New York City, Niagara, Palisades, Saratoga, Taconic and Thousand Islands. Finger Lakes Region Includes: Allan H. Treman State Marine Park, Black Diamond Trail, Bonavista State Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park, Canandaigua Lake State Marine Park, Catharine Valley Trail, Cayuga Lake State Park, Chimney Bluffs State Park, Deans Cove Boat Launch, Fair Haven Beach State Park, Fillmore Glen State Park, Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area, Honeoye Lake Boat Launch State Park, Keuka Lake State Park, Lodi Point State Park, Long Point State Park - Finger Lakes, Mark Twain State Park and Soaring Eagles Golf Course, Newtown Battlefield State Park, Robert H. Treman State Park, Sampson State Park, Seneca Lake State Park, Stony Brook State Park, Taughannock Falls State Park, Two Rivers State Park Recreation Area, Watkins Glen State Park

Requirements

  • Must be at least age 18 at time of appointment
  • Have a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Have a valid NYS Drivers License when required to drive state vehicles
  • Meet certain physical and medical requirements
  • Be of good moral character and successfully complete a background investigation
  • Successfully complete 24 hours of Security Guard training provided by NYS Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation
  • Possess basic computer and smartphone skills
  • Have a valid NYS issued ID
