Downers Grove Park District Seasonal Park Maintenance – Horticulture The Opportunity: We are accepting applications for a Seasonal Horticulture team member. With 48 parks, 2 high profile Natural Areas and numerous smaller naturalized areas in park settings, the District is seeking an enthusiastic individual to help maintain and improve our resources. At present, there are beds in 20 parks, comprising almost 3 acres of high visibility, high impact landscapes. The successful candidate is someone who wants to put their educational curriculum and experience to work and gain field experience in the care of woody and herbaceous plants. Reporting to and being mentored by the Superintendent of Parks, this employee will gain skills which will help them support the viability and sustainability of ornamental landscape plantings in a suburban setting. When You Will Work: Work hours are typically Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Some weekend duties are required and are assigned on a rotating basis, ask for more information. What you get : The hourly pay rate starts at $16.00. The District is flexible with start and end times for school purposes. A Typical Day in the Life: Primary Horticulture responsibilities include: Planting flowers and shrubs, weeding planting beds, and employing cultural practices to encourage the sustainability of plant material. Performs skilled labor in connection with maintenance and construction at District parks and facilities including landscaping, open space, paths, nursery and special facilities. Uses District owned vehicles and equipment to perform landscape maintenance and repairs. Operates small power equipment and hand tools. Follows District safety rules and procedures. Assists with on-going parks maintenance activities and special events. Other duties as assigned (job may be changed as necessary). About You: Able to work outdoors in changing weather conditions. Experience or education in Horticulture preferred. Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds. Familiarity with small engines, mowers, and power tools preferred. Possess an Illinois Driver’s License, or equivalent. Minimum of 18 years of age. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Appropriate clothing and steel toe boots are required for this position and not supplied by the Downers Grove Park District.
