About The Position

The Seasonal interpretation assistant is responsible for managing and supporting live interpretation efforts to welcome visitors with a wide range of needs and provide an engaging experience at the Garden. The assistant provides hands-on support to staff, hired tour leaders, and volunteer Garden Guides with tours and other interpretive programs. The flexible work schedule includes: four 6-hour days, including Saturday, plus extended hours at peak tour times.

Requirements

  • Experience working for a cultural organization
  • Able to work independently and on a team, exercising punctuality, reliability, and flexibility
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking to all audiences
  • Comfortable working outdoors and in glasshouse conditions
  • Able to traverse the Garden for an hour or more in various weather conditions
  • Friendly, outgoing, and proactive with the public and volunteers
  • Love of plants and gardens and the natural world
  • Competent with Microsoft Office applications
  • Willing to learn BBG’s volunteer computer database program, Volgistics
  • Understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Able to work weekends and some evenings

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Garden Guide and tour support volunteer tour schedules.
  • Support Garden Guides and tour leaders with listening devices and tour assistance.
  • Assist with Garden Guide volunteer continuing education workshops and trainings.
  • Organize and coordinate tour and training materials; interpretive materials.
  • Lead 60-minute tours of BBG as needed.
  • Input and track tour statistics.
  • Coordinate the administration of tour surveys and evaluations.
  • Install and update tour signs and other interpretive information.
  • Support the Interpretation department and weekend Garden staff as needed.
  • Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.
