August Camp is a nomadic hiking camp for adults that has operated since 1887, offering four one-week sessions each year at a different basecamp location, typically in the Pacific Northwest. Serving approximately 65 guests per week, the Camp provides a wide range of guided hikes and recreational activities led by volunteer August Camp Committee Members, Hike Leaders, and Camp Director(s). The August Camp “Croo,” coordinated by the Camp Manager(s), Assistant Manager, and Camp Chef, is responsible for hospitality and food service (including outdoor dish cleaning), as well as the setup, maintenance, and breakdown of the temporary camp facilities. For the 5.5-week season, Croo members live onsite in canvas wall tents and share a well-resourced, low-to-no cost, and relatively remote lifestyle, with provided lodging, transportation for daily outings, and full access to the camp kitchen and prepared meals. Due to the camp’s wilderness setting, Croo members are expected to have some experience with outdoor living and camping, along with an enthusiasm for communal backcountry life. Shifts generally run from 6am-9am, then again from 4pm-9pm, with late mornings and early afternoons off so that staff can participate in adventures of their own.
