About The Position

The Seasonal Construction Inspector position with the City of Des Moines involves performing inspection services on various non-complex municipal construction projects. This role is essential for ensuring that public improvement projects meet required standards and specifications. The position is temporary, lasting approximately 6-9 months, with a work schedule of 40 plus hours per week from April to October.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Some experience in public works and/or building trades construction.
• Valid driver's license or equivalent mobility.
• Satisfactory criminal, sex offender, and driving record background checks.
• Passing a pre-employment physical and drug screen.

Nice To Haves

• Prior experience in civil engineering technology and/or public improvement construction such as street paving or sewer construction.

Responsibilities

• Inspect a variety of non-complex public improvement projects under direction.
• Review plans, specifications, contract documents, and special provisions for assigned projects.
• Perform field and laboratory tests to ensure workmanship and materials meet required standards.
• Prepare detailed written daily reports on progress and details of inspections.
• Perform miscellaneous routine survey, drafting, clerical, and engineering assignments as directed.
• Keep immediate supervisor informed about work progress and potential issues.
• Respond to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
• Communicate and coordinate with others to maximize interdepartmental operations and activities.
• Assist Senior Construction Inspectors with tests, daily reports, and inspections of larger projects.
• Perform duties in the testing laboratory and survey department as needed.
