About The Position

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Senior Director of Youth Development, the Day Camp Director is responsible for planning, leading, and implementing core and non-core programs and experiences for children in both small and large group settings. They will also be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in their group.? The incumbent will provide high quality educational and recreational experiences for participants that focus on the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.?

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Minimum of 2 years of college completed in a related field is preferred.
  • Must have minimum of 2 years experience in working with children.
  • Experience hiring, training & supervising staff is preferred.
  • The incumbent must demonstrate creativity, enthusiasm and dedication.
  • Incumbent must have experience working with youth in a group setting, and creating and implementing lesson plans.
  • Additionally, s/he should possess the skills necessary to provide safe, appropriate and fun activities.
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified prior to the beginning of camp.
  • Ability to communicate and listen effectively as well as a willingness to learn.
  • Must be able to learn and use YMCA specific software within 14 days of employment. Must be capable of using basic Microsoft Office software.
  • Understanding of YMCA mission and cause is required. An ability to demonstrate YMCA cause within program setting is an advantage.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Must have hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment.
  • The worker is subject to environmental conditions. Activities may occur in a kitchen setting.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Must be able to lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Position requires bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency

Responsibilities

  • Work with camp administration, other counselors, parents and campers to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all campers in accordance with the YMCA core values; Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
  • Provide supervision to camp program staff including planning, assigning and directing work.
  • Ensuring youth gain opportunities to be physically active for 60 minutes during a full-day program, or 30 minutes during a half-day program, and that standards for healthy eating are met during camp.
  • Provide guidance to day camp counselors and communicate recommendations and concerns to Camp Leadership regarding day camp counselors’ performances.
  • Be able to work in groups, and independently to plan, prepare, and organize engaging and age-appropriate activities for campers.
  • Develop and implement a weekly schedule, coordinate field trips and collect any required participant waivers/materials.
  • Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week.? Activities may include crafts, nature, sports, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, Family Night, field trips, etc.?
  • Manage camp budget and order necessary supplies and materials for camp
  • Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
  • Ensure that the camp facilities are kept clean, organized, and free of litter.
  • Effectively communicate with parents about participants’ experiences and report concerns to Camp Leadership.
  • Maintain accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas.? This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.
  • Assist in mentoring CIT’s to develop a deeper understanding of leadership and counseling skills.
  • These are not the only duties to be performed; some duties may be reassigned, and other duties may be assigned as required.
  • Read all YMCA communications on a daily basis including but not limited to email.
