About The Position

Reporting to the Camps Coordinator, the seasonal Camp Counselor will support Kiewit Luminarium’s six-week summer camp program during June and July 2026 for students entering second through seventh grade. This position involves supporting daily camp activities, ensuring camper safety and promoting a positive and inclusive camp environment. This position plays an important role in supervising campers throughout the day, assisting the teacher with classroom activities, and helping maintain smooth camp operations. Preference will be given to candidates who are available for the full six-week summer camp program (weeks of June 8, June 15, June 22, July 6, July 13, and July 20). However, applicants who are available for one or more full camp weeks may still be considered based on program needs. Camp Counselors must be available Monday-Friday for each week they commit to working. In the application, please indicate which camp weeks you are available to work in full.

Requirements

  • Completed or currently pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies, science, engineering, art, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in museum education, formal education, informal learning environments, or comparable public-facing operations preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting youth-focused camp or enrichment programs.
  • First Aid/CPR certification required before camp begins.
  • Ability to manage daily classroom operations while fostering a positive, inclusive team culture.
  • Organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic camp setting.
  • Experience facilitating or supporting engaging, hands-on, and inquiry-based STEM activities for youth audiences, especially with children ages 7 to 13.
  • Knowledge of youth safety procedures, risk management practices, and emergency response protocols in camp or educational environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with children, parents/guardians, and colleagues.
  • Adaptability and problem-solving skills to respond calmly and effectively to unexpected challenges.
  • Enthusiasm for science learning, creativity, and the museum’s educational mission.
  • Positive, energetic, and inclusive attitude that helps create a welcoming environment for all participants.
  • English proficiency is required; bilingual skills (especially Spanish) are highly valued.

Responsibilities

  • Attend the required training session on May 30th - 31st to ensure understanding of camp policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Assist teachers with delivering engaging lessons and hands-on STEM educational experiences.
  • Assist campers with camp activities, projects, and daily routines, encouraging participation and positive behavior.
  • Organize and distribute materials and supplies for teachers and activities.
  • Assist teachers with cleaning and resetting the classroom and materials throughout the week.
  • Supervise campers in the classroom to maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment.
  • Supervise campers during field trips, lunches and break periods, promoting safe play and positive interactions.
  • Monitor campers during dismissal, before-care and after-care programs, maintaining a safe, structured, and welcoming environment.
  • Escort campers to the bathroom breaks, camp office, or designated locations as needed, ensuring safety and appropriate conduct.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
