JOB SUMMARY: Student assistants on University Communications’ media relations team assist with drafting public relations materials, including University news releases, social media content that elevates University news and faculty research, and outreach to local and national media. They also conduct important media research. Assignments have strict deadlines that are expected to be met. Student workers will receive constructive feedback from the professional staff. They will prepare their own written materials, participate in team meetings, shadow communications team members, and perform other functions of working in a professional office. Student assistants will work primarily in person with occasional remote options. Students working for the media relations team may not work for any news organization, including on-campus, as this would be a conflict of interest. SPECIFIC DUTIES: Draft media releases about University news and events Draft social media posts for media relations Conduct media research Complete assignments by assigned deadlines May be asked to support other areas of University Communications QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS: Ability to write news stories. Knowledge of MS Office programs. Knowledge of AP style. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud programs including Photoshop and Indesign preferred but not required. Confident, accurate, and courteous telephone and interview skills. Punctual and deadline oriented. Dress to show respect for yourself and the job.
