About The Position

The student tutor conducts one-on-one or small group tutorial sessions in the content area of nursing, specifically for NUR 313, NUR 323, and NUR 319 courses. The student tutor tutors a diverse population of undergraduate students in the Content-Area Tutoring Center. The peer tutor works in the Center in-person a minimum of 10 hours per week, Mondays through Fridays.

Requirements

  • A current 3.5 GPA.
  • Earned grade of an 'A' in the NUR 313, NUR 323, and NUR 319 classes.
  • Professional faculty recommendation letter from the biology department.
  • Good academic standing.
  • Enrolled full-time as a Barry University student.
  • Must work a minimum of 10 hours per week consistently.
  • Must be able to work for at least two semesters consecutively.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills.
  • Must be punctual, organized, professional, and courteous.

Responsibilities

  • Provides one-on-one and small-group tutorial services to a diverse population of undergraduate students.
  • Identifies students’ content-area skills needs.
  • Differentiates strategies and instructional materials to meet individual students’ needs.
  • Assists students in understanding the material while fostering students’ autonomy.
  • Engages students in tutoring sessions by utilizing active learning strategies.
  • Motivates students by being an active listener.
  • Provides positive feedback and makes recommendations for further study or practice.
  • Respects students’ diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives.
  • Documents student work and progress by using the processes and systems established within the Content-Area Tutoring Center.
  • Enters all data in a timely fashion as specified by the Glenn Hubert Learning Center’s Manager.
  • Communicates with the Glenn Hubert Learning Center’s Manager regarding students with challenging or unique situations.
  • Participates in professional development and training sessions as related to tutor responsibilities.
  • Maintains currency in the content area by reviewing the course syllabi and relevant course materials.
  • Actively participates in learning community meetings.
  • Participates in mandatory training sessions throughout the semester.
  • Maintains currency with technological resources for instructional and recordkeeping purposes.
  • Monitors and arranges for replenishment of consumable materials used in the tutoring environment.
  • Develops and facilitates workshop/short videos related to NUR 313, NUR 323, and NUR 319 classes.
