About The Position

The Ophthalmic Medical Assistant at South Central Regional Medical Center will assist physicians in the diagnostic testing, examination, education, and treatment of patients. The role requires a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) preferred or a willingness to become certified within one year of employment. The position is full-time and operates during the day.

Requirements

  • One year of related experience.
  • Experience obtaining OCTs, fundus photos, and visual fields preferred.
  • Strong people and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain competency and knowledge of current standards of practice.

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians in diagnostic testing and examination of patients.
  • Provide education and treatment to patients.
  • Maintain hospital standards for a clean and quiet patient environment.
  • Adhere to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement activities.
  • Maintain compliance with organizational policies and professional standards.
  • Take detailed medical history and determine reason for the patient's visit.
  • Check pupils, muscle, visual acuity, extraocular movements, and measure blood pressure.
  • Dilate pupils where appropriate.
  • Present patient history summary to the physician.
  • Assist with office procedures including chalazion excision, refractions, and tear duct probes.
  • Annotate patient charts with exam and treatment results.
  • Counsel patients regarding physician's orders and answer questions about surgery.
  • Schedule surgeries and consultations with other doctors.
  • Order contact lenses and write prescriptions under physician's instructions.
  • Maintain knowledge of ICD-10 diagnostic coding and CPT procedures codes.
  • Operate clinical equipment accurately.
