About The Position

This position requires an active USAccess clearance to be considered. Cherokee Federal is seeking a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (Scientist VII) to join our Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) on an intermittent schedule. This position requires a dedicated professional to oversee animal welfare in accordance with federal regulations, ensure compliance with animal care standards, and contribute to research impacting environmental health. Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience with animal research and regulatory compliance.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and CFR Title 9 (AWAR).
  • Familiarity with veterinary care standards and animal welfare principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to review and interpret scientific documents and animal care protocols.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Capability to handle complex regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in using email and video conferencing tools for remote work.
  • Must be able-bodied and capable of performing physical tasks such as walking over uneven surfaces and standing for extended periods.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.
  • This position requires an active USAccess clearance to be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous involvement with IACUC or similar regulatory committees is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review animal care and use programs for compliance.
  • Evaluate animal use forms, policies, and job aids.
  • Participate in IACUC voting actions.
  • Conduct bi-annual facility inspections.
  • Establish and manage veterinary care programs in conjunction with the Attending Biologist (AB).
  • Assess animal health and refine research activities as needed.
  • Provide guidance and training on animal care, husbandry, and welfare.
  • Communicate animal welfare issues and new guidelines to all relevant personnel.
  • Ensure adherence to the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 9 (AWAR).
  • Collaborate with the AB and IACUC to uphold regulatory standards.
  • Maintain clear communication with the IACUC and Institutional Official (IO).
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
