About The Position

We work with some of the top research organizations and facilities in the country including multiple institutes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Axle is looking to add a driven, flexible, organized, and meticulous Scientist to our dynamic team. The Contractor(s) shall provide services in support of the overall functions of the Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Laboratory of Neurological Infections and Immunity (LNII).

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years research experience with infectious prions and associated biohazards
  • Expert experience with neuroelectrophysiology of human brain organoids and other new alternative models

Responsibilities

  • Run and interpret multi-electrode array electrophysiology experiments on human brain organoids and other human alternative testing models and assist other lab members in similar experimental planning.
  • Use murine brain slice cultures for investigation of prion pathogenesis and the function of the prion protein in health.
  • Perform experiments with infectious human and animal prions practicing expert biosafety procedures.
  • Liaise with the research technologies branch to create substantial high quality OMICs data across a broad range of technologies.
  • Perform molecular imaging techniques, including confocal microscopy.
  • Manage and maintain the prion electrophysiology suite.
  • Provide upkeep and routine maintenance for projects, maintain laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, etc., required to handle biological materials, recombinant protein materials, acids, biological wastes, etc., maintaining work bench and equipment related to projects.
  • Catalog and label laboratory samples and consumables.
  • Liaise with vendors as needed.
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments and their results and prepare the information resulting from these experiments for presentations at laboratory-wide meetings and for publication.
  • Write reports of findings, stating methods and procedures, including any modifications employed, specimens and materials involved and results of experiments.
  • Interpreting, evaluating, and discussing the results of each experiment with the Federal Task Leader as part of the planning process for subsequent studies.
  • Operate and communicate effectively in a group, team-oriented working environment.
  • Work with and support others in a collegial, open, respectful, and interactive working manner.
  • Work collaboratively with others in the lab to generate data for publications.
